It could well be the box the subs are in. Got the sub model number handy, as well as the amp model? Also what sort of box are the subs in? Sealed? Vented?
really a box would matter??? sorry im kinda new to this audio stuff lol... can u tell me why my friend has alot of cotton in his box???? is that how come his is a deeper sound to it?
Actually the sub box is, in one sense, the most important part of of the sub system, it will make no diff. how good the sub is, how big or how many subs are used or how good or how many watts the amp is if the sub box is wrong.
Internal box volume, [net] is critical, even more so if it is a vented box, [ported] with the added factor that port volume has to also be correct.
The "cotton" in a sub box is there for dampening, if inside of box is lined with matting it will help eliminate "standing waves", stuffing a box will make it "appear" bigger to the sub, used when you are limited to size of box. 94

your box may very well be the culprit. The box is just as important as the speaker in it. Whenever I build a box, I always mat it as well as polyfil (the cotton stuff you are referring to). Even to the untrained ear, proper box size and what you put in it is very noticeable
I just find it funny that people think they can throw any sub in to any box and expect it to sound good. You might get lucky to get a box that is close to, or proper dimensions that it might not be too shabby. It's when it sounds like @$$ and they think they have a bad amp or bad subs, or even a bad system all together.
Post the sub/box/amp model numbers and someone on here can help you calculate the proper sized box. Wiring configurations also make a huge difference when setting up.
Even some dual sub boxes are sealed individually.

OP what kind of box do you have?
And how big is it?
Also if your filter settings on the amp and hu are messed up your sub could be (trying) to put out higher frequencies than you want it too...
