How many channels for components?
This might sound like a dumb question, but I dont know much about car audio. If I wanted to run 1 set of components how many channel amp would I need?

If you're buying a component set and using the passive crossovers provided with the set, then you'll need just 2 channels. The passive crossover is that little box-like thing shipped with component sets. It will have a few terminals, and if you look inside it, it will have rather large electronic parts - my friend thought his was an amplifier before I told him what it was.
If you're using active crossovers from your headunit, or you're piecing together your own component set and using active crossovers somehow - you'll need a separate channel for each speaker.
Pay attention to RMS powerhandling of your speakers, and I'm going to suggest that having a little headroom is a good thing. I like to use an amp well within its limits.
