ya...i had a similar setup in my trunk w/ a huge 3/4 of mdf....when i pulled it out to shed some weight cause it really wasnt neccesary...it was something like 60lbs...go as thin as you can w/ rigidity...also mdf has better sound charateristics than plywood due to its compisition

a sheet of wood is $20 if the whole box is $30 its a **** poor box ... i wouldnt recommend a prefab box unless it was a Qlogic </TD></TR></TABLE>

My $30 Wal-Mart box suits me just fine. The sub and amp were both free, so it's a real poor-man's setup, but it works great w/ the stock stereo.

Who are you to say that? You're right we do have different priorities. I do have plans to eventually have a nice stereo setup, but right now it's at the bottom of the list of the things I need to save money for. My car already had a 6-disc changer installed in it, and I installed inexpensive 6.5" speakers to replace the blown stock ones. I had a nice setup in my old car which I sold before buying this car, and I wanted bass again. So for $80 total to get a free sub and 4-channel amplifer working, it worked out great, and sounds just fine (no distortions, rattles or anything).

When it comes time to buy audio stuff, I'll probably move the 4-chan amp to power the mids and highs and buy another separate amp for the sub.

Well I dunno, maybe I don't have the most attuned ears but to me it sounds fine. Do I want it super loud? No. Do I want it super boomy? No. I just wanted more bass response than what the stock stereo and speakers could produce, and that's what I got. I actually checked the specs for my sub (JL 10W0) and measured the box and it's pretty damn close to what the sub calls for in terms of sealed box volume. At the normal volumes that I listen to my music (mostly trance techno, occasionally hip hop and other popular stuff), I can feel the bass notes, and it doesn't distort, so therefore it acheives what I wanted.

I have attempted building a custom tube enclosure for my old car right before I sold it, did TONS of research, downloaded enclosure design programs, even bought the loudspeaker and enclosure design cookbook, but I decided for this setup, custom was NOT worth the time or effort or cost.
