CRX audio system project, pix
I have been working on the audio system in my 91 CRX for a few weeks, thought I would give an update for those looking for ideas. The design ideas around this system from the begining where ultra light weight, big sound, low current (demand on charging system) and little use of existing space.
First off is the front speaker pods that will house 6.5" mid-bass drivers, I was looking for tons of mis bass, so I went with fully enclosed sealed fiberglass kick pods, pics are of unfinished product, they will be finished in vinyl
The mid-high setup is a 3 way, 6.5" inch mids in the kicks , 4" mids in sealed fiberglass enclosures in factory door locations, and tweeters behind factory grills in the door, pics of door speakers will follow
Next was the sub enclosure. Again, weight and space, and big output with little power was the idea. I went with a JL Audio 10W0 4 ohm driver (the 10W1 has since replaced the W0). This is a very efficient woffer, and offers great sound and little weight. The enclosure started with preping the surface of the side panel with blue painters masking tape. Next, 5 layers of fiberglass mat was added.
woofer ring with recessed baffle is epoxied in place using wooden dowels
enclosure near complete, lets here it before we go any further
pic of back of enclosure, shows contours of box, perfect fit
The system is powered off of a single amplifier, Phoenix Gold's ZX500 Ti, providing 75 watts per channel to the front components, and 300 watts to the sub. No rear speakers where used. The head unit is a Alpine CDA-7995.
More to follow

Nice! I had always wanted to do that with my CRX, but never did. I might have to build something like that for my CL, at least the sub enclosure not the kick panel speakers, my skill is limited.

Re: CRX audio system project, pix (kay@neighborhoodtrends)
Yea, its just the rough look of the polyester after glassing it. I always make it a habit of listening to things before I go the extra steps to complete them, nothing like making something from start to finish to find out it sounds like s#@t and doesnt fit right.
Thanks for the tip on the paint, I'll look into that for a finish option
