Hey guys, I'm new to audio equipment and don't understand any of the lingo at all. I am trying to do some audio upgrades in my EK hatch for my daily driving needs. Anyway, I have some of the items picked out, but after reading the reviews it is recommended that I use an amp to power the speakers. I am going with the following:
Alpine iDA-X100 headunit
Infinity Kappa 62.7i 6 1/2 speakers
Infinity Kappa 692.7i 6x9 speakers
I was looking into the Alpine PDX-2.150 amp, which is two channel, which is what I think I need to to accomodate both sets of speakers. Is there enough amp to power this setup and if not what should I look into as far as power and anything else I should look into before I tear into this project. Any help is greatly appreciated. Sorry for being a noob in advance.

2 channels is for 2 speakers. You have 4 speakers you need a 4 channel amplifier. Im not sure on what they make but the PDX series Alpine amps are awesome. I have a hifonics, Zxi6406d amplifier, for alpine type r speakers, 51/4 components and 6x9's.
You should have no problem driving those Infinity speakers, the Alpine HU is 4x18W RMS into 4 ohms it will do about 4x28W-30W RMS into 2 ohms.
You will have to run a fused 12ga power lead from the batt. to behind the HU and connect the HUs 12V+ constant power, [yellow] to it instead of the the 12V+ constant in the OEM radio harness, it's gauge it too thin to carry the current the HU needs to make its maximum RMS wattage, you will also need to run a 12ga ground lead from the chassis of the HU, [back brace screw location] to the cars chassis, [floor pan is best, but any good ground point will work].
With properly installed speakers your system will sound pretty good and be "relatively", [depending on what you consider loud].
If the above system is missing anything it will be some "punch" at the lower frequencies, BASS, specifically sub bass, a single 10", [around 300W continuous] in a sealed box with a little more then "around 300W" driving it, will give you that bottom end.
You have picked a pretty good package, if you install it properly it will be an above average system.
if the budget is a little tight, start with the HU first, beef up the power and ground like I suggest above, you will be surprised at what your stock speakers sound like with a little more power driving them

To accommodate for both sets of speakers, you would need a 4 channel amp (or (2) 2 channel amps). You don't need to do that anyways, just amp the front speakers and leave the rear speakers run off the HU.
I'm guessing your front speakers are gonna be the Infinity Kappa 62.7i 6.5 right? If so, that amp you provided, the Alpine PDX-2.150 will be way more than enough since those speakers (IK 62.7i 6.5) is only 75 RMS, and the amp is 150x2.
And the Alpine iDA-X100? I have no idea about those. You do know that it doesn't CDs right? Just "external sources".

I almost have those exact speakers (front is Kappa 60.5cs components and rear is Kappa 697.3), and they're being driven by this amp, which is apparently no longer being sold. You could probably find it on eBay or another retailer if you do a Google search.

Yes I am using 6 1/2 fronts, that what fits my doors from the research I did. Yes I am familiar that the headunit I selected only runs things like ipods. Thats what I listen to predominantly. I can't remember the last time I listened to a cd.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by fcm »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"> You should have no problem driving those Infinity speakers, the Alpine HU is 4x18W RMS into 4 ohms it will do about 4x28W-30W RMS into 2 ohms.

I am not sure if I want all that bass, I don't really know if I will need that much. This is for my daily driver setup. I just wanna make sure everything else is golden and I will pick up some 12ga wiring for the headunit. My last question is can the headunit sufficiently power the rear speakers, or should I look into a amp with more channels to do the job? I would rather have the speakers be the weak link and have the extra power to drive them.

As I said, the HU will drive the speakers without any problem, if you want a little more output from the speakers I would recommend a 4ch amp, [about 4x50W-75W RMS into 2 ohms], use 2 channels to drive the front speakers, [high-pass] disable the tweeters on the 6x9s, [or just use the stock 6x9s] wire them in series for a 4 ohm load, [Infinity] 8 ohm load, [stock] and connect them to the bridged rear channels of the amp, [full-range, or low-pass if x-over can be set at around 5000Hz] it will improve imaging and staging.
You really do not need rear speakers, if want rear speakers, [rear fill] you do not want high frequencies coming from behind you, [disable the tweeters] also a mono signal in the rear will help stereo imaging in the front, and less gain, [volume] in the rear will help staging, [front stage].

You seem very knowledgeable FCM.... but like I mentioned in my first post, I don't know **** about audio, and I don't understand one word you said. It's a shame you don't live closer, because you seem like you are great at this and I would prompt you to install it for me. As soon as I get all my **** in I will readup more on this stuff so I have an idea as to what I am doing.
