JDM used engines
Hey, I was wondering, you guys who buy JDM swaps, do you encounter any leaks and/or seal problems, specifically valve seals, when you start up and start driving?
Why I'm asking, is that when I bought my ITR (JDM) it had been parked up for 2 years. As i drove it more it started consuming oil, although I wasn't losing power. I called back the previous owner and he said the car never consumed oil when he had it.
Compression was good @ 215psi across the board but I would get blue smoke on deceleration. I have a friend who is a Japanese used car dealer and he said that usually happens when the cars are not in use for a long while.
If this is so, what would be a good way to start up an engine that has been in storage for over a year or two?

^ I have since rebuilt that engine in 2008.
Just wanted to know if there is any specific way to start up and engine that has been stored for a long period of time.

If it is leaking on decl check you PCV and replace it. When you decelerate it puts a high vacuum on the PCV allowing oil to make it by.
Now if you are having major oil consumption the problem may be else ware.

get RIGHT, that thing used to burn a qt of Mobil1 10w30 in a fortnight (about 700kms).
But the first few weeks the oil wouldn't move.
I got the car at 74,000 kms.
PCV was fine when I checked it, working one-way as it should.

HMO FTW. My JDM ITR fired right up and hasnt consumed any oil or anything noticable. A lot of people told me oh VTEC eats oil. Hmm I never had to refill or add oil between oil changes. Hit and miss I guess? Just locate the exact source and change w/e seals need to be replaced. Try a leakdown test and maybe you can pin point the leak.

Well, it's in!
The original engine I got with the car has been rebuilt and blown. This is a replacement I picked up.
I finished up today, fresh oil, Hamp filter, and Honda Anti-freeze.
I took a 3 minute drive in the neighborhood. It feels awesome with my 8.8lb flywheel and 4.785 final drive.

Re: JDM used engines
Update:
Went to the dyno last night...
Mods:
AEM CAI
Test pipe
I actually got up to 175 with the stock ECU by retarding the timing on the dizzy. I then swapped the ECU for the Power FC and dropped the vtec to 5300rpm.
