Default Blown Engine? Need Advice

My car had been burning abnormal amounts of oil, and I had been keeping an eye on it. I changed the plugs and did my last oil change not too long ago and it seemed like the problem had went away. I was just due for another oil change, and was on my way home from work the other day and I go to get on it, and all of a sudden my valves started tapping extremely loud, so I slowed down and made it home safely. They'd start tapping above 4K. I checked the oil and it didn't even read on the dip stick. I opened up the oil cap and looked in the valve cover and didn't see any oil in the engine :[ I put two quarts of castrol in and tried to start the car and I didn't even try to drive it again, engine was making all kinds of sounds. Sounds like it's possible to re-build the engine cheap or just buy an entire new one? What do you guys think is damaged?

It's a 96' EX, D16Y8, 104K miles, automatic and I'm the 2nd owner. It's just been my daily driver and mainly sees highway millage, taken very good care of. I can't believe the engine went bad

I'm not a big pro on these things but it does sound like the engine got starved for oil. Perhaps the cams are damaged if it is was only a lack of oil getting to the top end of the engine. Myself, I'd start by adding a decent weight of oil in, and seeing if it goes away. If not, try removing the valve cover and see if there is any obvious signs of wear on the valves/cams and such. Maybe if you can see something there you could save some money there and just do the top half or a part.
