Driving home from work today, car began to lose response....Car has approximately 80k...stock C5 motor. Car would not rev past 4000 rpm...
Would this be my headgasket?
CEL did not flash either.

The idling was operating normal.
It just seemed boggy when I accelerated full throttle....and would begin to rock back and forth when I go up to 3-4k rpms.

That's what I was thinking. I actually had an 02 sensor go out on my cat and the car bogged for a little while and then it just died on me, so I don't think it's that.

if i were you i'd do these.
-replace fuel filter
-change spark plugs
-inspect the spark plug wires / replace
-clean air filter
-check oil/ check coolant
-check/replace cap/rotor
and if it's still bad. check compression ratio and maybe leak down
-do a valve adjustment.
-check timing
and.. it's probably not the headgasket. i dont know where you came up with that one ..

A plug going out would give you a bad idle as well...

if i were to put it in "order"
-check oil
-check coolant
-inspect the spark plugs /replace
-inspect the spark plug wires / replace
-inspect the dizzy cap and rotor /replace
-inspect the injectors and clean it if necessary
-inspect the Throttle body and clean the butterfly ( most likely not related to this problem but if you haven't done it.. why not )

def a ignition thing...a fuel filter would not cause this. put new spark plugs in a get back to us. if its not that, id try swaping out a dizzy with a friend and seeing if thats it. My car had this problem and it was dizzy related.

The motor wouldn't rev past 3-4k rpm?
I'm planning to tune up the car today so hope this works.

could be distributor...my stock distributor took a crap one day on the dyno, but it would stop revving at about 5K and it would just bounce on 5K like it was a rev limiter. I still think its something ignition related. if you know someone with a B series OBD2 motor see if you can swap out the distro and test it.
just out of the blue this started happening? is it idling ok? or its been getting gradually worse? any modifications like VAFC or ECU?

Yeah just out of the blues....It idles fine (consistently at 800-900 rpms)
I forgot to mention that I do have the VAFC hooked up to the vehicle..but have not adjusted/tweaked with the device yet.

But the problem still persists.

Cap and Rotor are only parts of the Dizzy.
You still have the ignitor and the Cam sensor (which can only be replaced with another dizzy, ignitor though you can replace without a dizzy)
The reason trying another dizzy was suggested was to determine without you buying parts if that's your culprit.
So as mentioned... swap the dizzy and report back.

I bet its the COIL! I had the same problem in my Old gsr! the car would not rev past 4k, it only lasted 3days then stop running! But try someone elses dizzy first
yea I am talking about the entire dizzy, not just cap and rotor. It takes 2 mins to swap a dizzy, just mark the timing so its about right. Report back, but Im willing to bet thats the issue.
