There is a large argument over this that has been discussed in a few different threads and researched by a few different websites, of which I have no links to because my eyes are heavy and if you are really interested you can search.
The AEM and other name-brand intakes claim to have a special pipe design that increases airflow and boasts higher performance. This is true within some respects, but it doesn't warrant the large price difference. Most people on H-T would recommend that you get an e-bay intake with a nice k&n filter. You get the best of both worlds! I recommend buying a bypass valve as well if you plan on extending the intake into a true CAI, just in case.

so true.....I ended up shelling out the $200+ for a complete comptech ice box intake system. I had the aem cai before as well as the aem sri. Lets just say, I'm not going back....I drove through a 1.5-2 foot puddle (highway was flooded), thought for sure I was going to hydro lock, but I made it through. Filter was dry!
In some cases, you get what you pay for.

stock honda pipe with either k&n open end filter or something like that.
irun a stock type-r intake pipe and a Apex'i power intake that made more power than an AEM Short ram and a AEM cold air on our dyno
