My integra is having issues with vtec. One day i shut my car off and went in a friends and i left like 5 mins later and when i started my car it started kinda weird and the check engine light came on. I used the plug behind the glove box to find it was throwing codes 22 and 23 so i cleaned the screen in the soleniod. It seemed better for a couple days and just again tonight it did it. when it happens i dont get a check engine light, and 5 mins later i could drive it the same and it would be fine. I just changed my oil and i know the level is good. I dont think the motor has a thermostat because it takes a good 15mins to get to the first line. I bought a mugen thermostat but i didnt know if i need a new gasket or not and ive been putting it off. please help!

 

Thats a hard post to read, something about 5 minutes and CEL and then another 5 minutes but no check engine light, a friends house and no thermostat. Is the car warmed up? If not vtec doesnt engage.

Sometimes when i get into vtec it kinda feels like its sputtering, and 5 mins later i could drive it the same and it would be fine (smooth). When it has the problem it has black smoke coming from the exhaust (not purple).

Also yeah the car is at 1/4 temp on the gauge, I never drive it cold

 

Well the knock sensor will cause a rich condition (along w/ pulling timing) and the oil pressure trip won't allow vtec to engage. My guess is that you had some problem other then just a random fluke of check engine lights. Have you checked your plugs and dist. cap/rotor? Also did you get the oil light on the dash flashing or just the code?

 

The oil light has never came on except when you start the car. plugs are new ngk iridium and 10.3mm obx plug wires. The cap is a new msd modified cap with a blaster msd external coil. Its had this problem for a while but its just starting to bother me (had problem well before the mods). Has to be something stupid. Wouldnt codes 22 and 23 mean bad soleniod? Where is the knock sensor?

 

if its a code 22, just do this. change your oil and reset your ecu. shold be back again. same thing happened to me...well i had a code 22 and did all that and it fixed my problem.
