It depends on if it is the pressure switch malfunctioning, or if the oil pressure is low enough to throw the switch.

The VTEC pressure switch is next to VTEC solenoid and is supposed to close the circuit to ground when it has the correct pressure. There are obviously work-arounds if it is a bad switch, but you could cause mechanical damage if there is actually not enough oil pressure to activate VTEC.

might sound stupid, but check your oil level

Go check your oil, it could possibly be low amount of oil. I had the same problem and just changed my oil, after that it was fine.

Yeah, the first and easiest check is the oil level. After that checks out, you could be brave and bypass the switch, or you could make sure that you have enough oil pressure to activate VTEC. There is probably a way to make sure the switch works by applying pressure to it and using a multimeter, but it might be more trouble than it is worth to just throw a known working switch on there, considering how easy they are to change, and the fact that the switches interchange from pretty much all VTEC motors.

If there were oil pressure problems, wouldn't the red oil pressure check light come on?

I have a CEL code 22 on my stock 93 Del Sol with 200k miles. From all these posts, it seems like the pressure sensor is usually fine, I'm wondering if a dying oil pump is the most likely problem for old motors.

It's not uncommon for there to not be enough oil pressure to activate VTEC, but still enough pressure to keep the oil light on the dash happy. Happened a lot with my car.

Case in point, when I built my CRVTEC I kept getting the CEL-22 error. No amount of re-soldering my wires and connections [modified LS harness for VTEC] could fix the issue. I ended up borrowing an electronic oil pressure gauge from a friend, put the sensor where the VTP sensor goes, and bridged pin D6 on the ECU to pin A4 [VTP signal to VTEC Solenoid, respectively].

Found I had great oil pressure, so I put the sensor back in to fill the port on the head, and kept the D6>A4 bridge. No more CEL-22.

Does this mean you just bypassed the oil pressure check?

For those of us that are basically stock, there's got to be another way to fix the problem. In other words, something that was working, stopped working. If I can find a troubleshooting checklist for this CEL somewhere, I'll post it up for you guys.

Exactly, I bypassed the sensor altogether. With the ECU, the VTEC output [A4] is sending voltage, and the VTP input [D6] is looking for voltage from the sensor. By providing the VTP sensor input voltage from the VTEC solenoid output, you're effectively making a switch that does exactly what the sensor should when there's adequate pressure.

It's not uncommon for VTP sensors to die, it happens a lot. Replace it, and be done, I'm 99% sure that's your only issue.
