Default Remote Start?

When i bought my 91 ls (5 speed) the previous owner said it has a remote starter, but the batteries were dead in the remote (so no way to test, i thought)

just a quick question does you clutch have to be bypassed for all remote starts to work? because mine isn't, so does this mean there is no remote start?

and what should i look for when i look for a remote start system?
(to see if there is one in the car)

Yes, there has to be a clutch bypass for the remote starter to work on a manual transmission vehicle. You may not see it b/c it could have been spliced then taped back up to look factory.

If you want to look for a remote start system, drop the lower dash panel under the steering wheel and look around for the module, you should see a black box with some of the wires going up towards the middle where your ignition wires and harness is.

Look for an antenna, a valet switch ( small little push button switch), check under your hood for a hood pin that would have been added, check by the coil to see if any wires were spliced or taped with another wire running back to your firewall/gromet.

Or just get a new battery for the remote, put the car in neutral (just to play it safe), and see if it remote starts.

If you want to post a pic of the remote, I'm sure one of us will recognize it and be able to help you out.
There's 3 different ways I've seen a remote work to start a remote starter.
-One button, pushed once.
-One button, pushed twice.
-Two buttons, both pushed once at the same time.

And be sure when you push the button(s) that you push long enough. Holding down for a full second ought to do it, not just a quick push, that doesn't always send the signal completely.

No, it doesnt have to be bypassed for all remote starts. There is an output on the remote starter unit that sends a signal to the clutch switch for remote starting.

Those that bypass the clutch switch altogether just for a remote starter system, dont know what their doing.
