Default problem with tach in gauge cluster

hey. the needle on my tach on the gauge cluster is jumpy. i even replaced the gauge cluster itself amd it still has the same prob. the idling is fine, but just isnt accurate to know when to shift because it hops around (while driving only). must be an electrical issue????

When ur tach is jumping does the engine kind of bog and cut out? If it does then check ur ignitor. If it doesn't then check all ur grounds, especially thermostat ground.

Definitely check your wiring, or pull a few ignitors from the junk yard because their way too expensive to buy brand new.

Most likely the connector that goes to your vss. Unplug it wipe it off and push the wires in it that will fix it. Ive seen this alot on honda's

i would say it's either some kind of wiring problem or it's something with the distributor. i kind of doubt that it's the VSS if the speedometer is working properly.

btw. nice myspace pics

and your point? Lots of people do that.

It's most definitely a wiring problem. I don't know what all affects the tach signal, other than the tach signal wire itself. It's probably some interference or something from a poor ground somewhere.

my point is.......that aren't you suppose to switch the backs or something? someone told me you cant just plug n play itr clusters into non-itr cars.

oh well I don't know about that. Maybe the OP should search for threads concerning putting ITR clusters in non-R Integras and see if anyone else has had the same problem.

I had same problem...
Give more info of your setup, are you N/A forced induction, ECu ?..., I have a 2000 Ls integra OBD2B with a P06 ( Turbo Setup )Ecu wich is OBD1 and look like the signal was getting corrupted or something by the ecu. I spoke with several people with OBD2B and OBD1 Ecu and all those who I spoke to had this issue.

I tryed all those nice step about ignitor and dizzy and cluster and look wire...and bla bla but this was not related at all.

I solved the Issue with a nice aftermarket tach from autometer and pluged it to the little blue wire that look alone on the right side of your engine bay near the firewall.

Now I can shift at the right time

The tach must be getting a bad or degraded signal from the distributor then, if it did the same thing on your stock cluster.

I think the consensus here is that the tach itself is fine, but there is a problem with the signal coming from the distributor.
