problem with tach in gauge cluster

hey. the needle on my tach on the gauge cluster is jumpy. i even replaced the gauge cluster itself amd it still has the same prob. the idling is fine, but just isnt accurate to know when to shift because it hops around (while driving only). must be an electrical issue????

Re: problem with tach in gauge cluster (importracegirl)

When ur tach is jumping does the engine kind of bog and cut out? If it does then check ur ignitor. If it doesn't then check all ur grounds, especially thermostat ground.

Definitely check your wiring, or pull a few ignitors from the junk yard because their way too expensive to buy brand new.

no my engine doesnt bog or anything.. sounds perfectly fine. just the gauges jump like crazy...

Re: problem with tach in gauge cluster (importracegirl)

Probably a loose wire somewhere check grounds

Re: problem with tach in gauge cluster (hondaman86)

Most likely the connector that goes to your vss. Unplug it wipe it off and push the wires in it that will fix it. Ive seen this alot on honda's

yee SERIOUS 11-27-2006 11:32 AM

i would say it's either some kind of wiring problem or it's something with the distributor. i kind of doubt that it's the VSS if the speedometer is working properly.

btw. nice myspace pics https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

Re: (importracegirl)

check the blue wire that is the tach signal wire

so you have an ITR CLUSTER in an non-ITR car?

and your point? Lots of people do that.

It's most definitely a wiring problem. I don't know what all affects the tach signal, other than the tach signal wire itself. It's probably some interference or something from a poor ground somewhere.

my point is.......that aren't you suppose to switch the backs or something? someone told me you cant just plug n play itr clusters into non-itr cars. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

PatrickGSR94 11-29-2006 07:29 AM

oh well I don't know about that. Maybe the OP should search for threads concerning putting ITR clusters in non-R Integras and see if anyone else has had the same problem.

ITR Plug and Play kit https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

my friend had that same problem but with an si cluster in his ek. he adjusted it so the car would read kilometers and rpm just fine

yee SERIOUS 11-29-2006 07:44 AM

she just has the change the green film. i just searched it. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif althought it seems everyone has different problems with itr clusters.

OP....have you changed the film? your cluster is a jdm itr cluster?

IntegraMastaz 11-29-2006 08:29 AM

I had same problem...
Give more info of your setup, are you N/A forced induction, ECu ?..., I have a 2000 Ls integra OBD2B with a P06 ( Turbo Setup )Ecu wich is OBD1 and look like the signal was getting corrupted or something by the ecu. I spoke with several people with OBD2B and OBD1 Ecu and all those who I spoke to had this issue.

I tryed all those nice step about ignitor and dizzy and cluster and look wire...and bla bla but this was not related at all.

I solved the Issue with a nice aftermarket tach from autometer and pluged it to the little blue wire that look alone on the right side of your engine bay near the firewall.

Now I can shift at the right time https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

Re: (undercoverdc2)

yes so i have the jdm gauge cluster now but i had the gsr cluster before that and it still did the same thing.

my car is just a stock 94 ls non vtec OBD1

the wiring in the back hasnt been tapped in2 its still the same factory harness. where is this green film people are talking about?

yee SERIOUS 11-29-2006 09:56 AM

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=321520

look at that thread. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif be careful though!

PatrickGSR94 11-29-2006 09:59 AM

The tach must be getting a bad or degraded signal from the distributor then, if it did the same thing on your stock cluster.

importracegirl 11-29-2006 10:02 AM

Re: (undercoverdc2)

wow many people have different problems and solutions... but isnt it weird that when i had my gsr cluster in it did the same thing? so it shoulb be sumthing with the car not the clustersss right?

IntegraMastaz 11-29-2006 10:07 AM

multiple cluster, same issue = don't mess with your cluster...

yee SERIOUS 11-29-2006 10:27 AM

but does your orginal LS cluster work properly?

importracegirl 11-29-2006 11:13 AM

Re: (IntegraMastaz)

thats wut i was thinkin too... im gonna try out an ls cluster to see... if that doesnt work i dunno wut to do....

PatrickGSR94 11-29-2006 11:18 AM

I think the consensus here is that the tach itself is fine, but there is a problem with the signal coming from the distributor.
