I got a 1995 B18b1. So last night I noticed that mt temp gauge started getting above half way point. So I stopped and look and seen I had a coolant leak I think at the radi cap. and that my res was full to the top. I took out the thermostat to make sure it was opening prop(i left it out). made sure fluid was topped off. and test drove. The temp gauge stayed right under half. but i still was leaking. and coolant filling up into my res.
I let it sit over night and checked it this morning. (thermostat still out) it didnt take long for it to warm up but never reach over the half way point.
Can any one give me some input to check out next? could it be the water pump?

for $15 just replace the thermostat and gasket, then you can be confident it is good. Then check your hoses for pin holes/leaks, and finally, replace to stock oem hose clamps, they suck. My car takes about 10-15 minutes for the therm. to crack open, and the temp gage really should never go above 1/2 way. I really dont think it is your water pump is bad since it operates ok when there is no thermostat. That means you have flow through the system.

Well i still have the thermostat out i just gonna replaced it. and i bought a new radi cap and that seems to be where the leak was.
yea i would check all your hoses like the bypass and the lower and upper cooling hoses... i would also change the head gasket just to be safe...
think about it... if you do the labor yourself its still cheaper then changing your water pump.
