it could be one of a few things either a rod knock, a rod bearing spunm or you need a valve adjustment if your car has a rev limiter its prolly just a simple vavle adjustment but if your car doesnt have a limiter like mine and you misshift you could have spun a bearing which i did also what motor is it and is it a clicking sound from the top of the motor under your vavle cover or is it a deep kinda clunking sound from your bottom end?? just let us know what rpm you went up too and that can help diagnose the problem too

Perform a compression test. I assume this was the money shift (3rd redline to 2nd)? What ECU? Any CELs?

there a simple test you can do to check for rod knocks or spun bearing , turn on your motor when is cold and take one sparkplug wire at the time and place it back ondo thison eash one ,the knock should minimize on the damage bearing or rod because there is no stress in it , try to do it when is cold, if the noise still there after doing this you problably want check your valves. ?is your car missfiring?

Rev limiter has nothing to do with this - it cannot do anything to prevent a mechanical over-rev (e.g., a mis-shift).

have you takin the valve cover off and checked each one of your rocker arms??? cuz if one is off then you just gotta do a valve adjustment and the noise should go away

Is it a slight top end tick or is it a deep bottom end knock. There is a difference, im not sure how mechanically inclined u are but you maybe be able to listen closer with a stethoscope
