Long-term effects of running rich?
I have Crower cams which make me run rich at idle and low revs, combined with upped fuel pressure. It runs fine well, just pretty freakin' rich at idle, you can smell it easily and the back of my car gets dirty pretty quickly. My question is, will this have any ill effects in the long run, like several years? Will running the engine to redline every once in a while "blow the carbon buildup out"?
I could get an S-AFC but I don't want that expense or complexity really, plus I'll be parking the car in a VERY theft-prone area. I would also get Hondata but my car is OBDII so with wiring harness it would be $500 plus tuning.
Thanks!

Re: Long-term effects of running rich? (LSnoVTEC)
I can sell you a slightly used S-AFC for $220 if you're interested. The GReddy Rebic III is a good AFC too, but it's about the same price as the APEXi unit.
Also, why not just adjust your FPR??!

Because it may run lean at higher RPM's, I run a JUN road/race ECU, it runs rich as hell for longevity purposes, but I leaned it out at idle and part throttle for economy and emissions purposes. I recommend what everyone else has, get a V-AFC or S-AFC, it will make your options endless.

Running that rich will make you good friends with 5.0 owners.
..I mean come on, you'll see them every visit to the gas station.

Yeah adjusting the FPR lower will make it run VERY lean at high rpms especially with the cams, not a good idea since running too lean can do more damage than running rich.
LSnoVTEC I will think about your offer for sure, that's a good price. Will the fact that it is used interfere with ease of installation in any way?
Oh and by the way, despite running 10-15% more fuel all the time, 3 out of my last 4 tanks have been 31mpg! That includes going to the track, too, and it's like 2/3 highway, 1/3 city. Efficient driving helps....
Keep the responses coming. I'll probably get an AFC soon.

Oh and my idle is pretty good, only gets lumpy when I do stop and go stuff, and it's stalled just once in the past month. On my emissions test I'll probably get an AFC by then, but if I had to do one now all I'd have to do is lean out the FPR like crazy, since you don't go beyond 3k rpm.

Re: Long-term effects of running rich? (LillDragun)
LillDragun, yup yer right.
Yeah well I don't have an emission test anytime soon, and by the time I do I'll probably have shelled out for the AFC. I probably would have tried just a couple psi lower than stock on the emission test if I had to. How long does it take to tune the AFC on the dyno? Do you think they could do that and the FPR (pretty easy to do since it'll all be leaned out by the AFC) and cam gears in one hour?

just stash the SAFC in your console, your glovebox, etc. no one said it HAS to be out in the open.
