Are there any other differences between ls and GSR besides the tower brace bar, that will make alternator change different?

I am a little unclear, did you remove the front sway bar and pull it from underneath?

The GS-R intake manifold and the vacuum canister that controls the butterfly valves takes up a TON more room than the LS manifold does.
If someone with a GS-R and stock intake manifold has pulled out their alternator from above, I'd sure like for someone to show me how to do it.

I looked at my Helm's manual, and it does say to pull it out from the top, but it also says to unbolt both the upper and lower brackets that hold the alternator, so I don't know if that would help or not.
I looked at my car, and to me it looks like the combination of the end of the fuel rail + the fuel pressure regulator, the intake manifold and vacuum canister, the power steering hose, and the brake master cylinder all make it way to crowded to pull it out from the top, at least on a GS-R.

you can't do it on an LS either..... i tried
all helms says is to take off the top and bottom brackets. it does not say remove from the top or bottom.

It does say to lift it out.

just loosen all the belts, take all the belts off, loosen alternator bolts, pull alternator out the top. on my DA it is even easyer if you take off the power steering pump.

Just to throw my two cents in, in case anyone else checks this thread...
I just changed the alternator in my 94 GSR, and tried it from the top. It looks like there's no way it can come out the top, but it is actually not that difficult.
Unbolted power steering, master cylinder (without disconnecting brake lines), and moved the wires running above the alternator. I removed the top alternator mount, and unbolted from the bottom mount.
I just pulled the master cylinder away from the brake booster, and moved it out of the way without disconnecting lines, so I would not have to bleed it. With the power steering hose pulled out of the way, the alternator slid right out with some maneuvering, and the new one back in.
