Default G2 front bumper tech question

There is a small gray piece of plastic on each side of the car behind the front bumper, directly below the corner lights. What are these things? They fit so loosely in their slots they don't seem to have a function. When I reinstall the bumper, these plastic pieces show in the gap between the top of the bumper and the corner lights. I don't think they are supposed to show but I've tried several times to "place" the bumper over them with no luck.

What do you think? Am I missing a vital piece of info?

Default Keep the Gap!

They are there to keep the gap between the cover and the fender. If you don't use them you will wear the paint off the fender from vibration against the fender.

Ok, so when I look at a different G2 that has an "unmolested" front bumper, I don't see these gray pieces and the bumper is really snug up against the fender and corner lights. On mine, you can easily see these gray pieces. ???
