Default engine over-heating

Ok my car will start out fine but 5-6 mins. in the drive the engine therm. is reading red. I found a hole in the radiator and have a new one on order but the question is if there is a hole in the radiator would that make the fan kick on only when the engine is shut completly off? Please help this is getting frusterating.

the fan should kick on as soon as the radiator gets to halfway between cold and the middle. it will stay on after the car is off sometimes if the radiator is that hot.

when you put the radiator in, check the fan switch sensor and you themostat. you might want to replace those anyways to be safe. they are cheap parts.

Your hole in the radiator is letting enough air into the system to keep the thermo switch from activating the fan. The air in the head sometimes keeps the coolant from reaching the switch to activate it. Don't drive it until you have the leak fixed (new radiator) and the system properly bled.

I had a small leak in one of the hoses under the intake manifold, and the same symptoms happened to me. And it was a biotch to diagnose because the leak was vertually undetectable, at least you know what is causing your leak.

Thank you very much, now i just gotta wait for the radiator to come in and im starting to wonder if i am going to need a fuel pump soon cause the engine idle is fluxuating and was having major trouble turning over plus i wasn't hearing the fuel pump kick on before i turn over the engine

alot of times with a coolant issue, you'll get air in your system and that will cause idle fluctuation.

Ya, don't assume it is your fuel pump, they rarely go out, more often it is the Main Fuel Relay or something else even easier to fix.

That would make my life so much easier... I will let you all know how the radiator helps it... Thanx again

if you have a hole and you are leaking coolant, the thermo switch for the rad fans will not turn on because of the lack of coolant passing on the switch.. i know bc the same thing happen to me and my car overheated
