check your wiring, your distributor may be fine.

if you are OBD1, find the wiring diagram/ecu pinout and trace the wires.

a short somewhere, causing the coil to draw too much power and melt itself..
something along those lines. just check for any bare wires from the harness all the way to the distributor

An ohm-meter is more reliable than inspecting the wires, but sometimes it's just a PITA to find it when it's intermittent.

ok, here we go...

Black/yellow
This wire comes from the ignition switch, it should have battery voltage whenever the ignition is turned to 'on' or 'start'.
Within the distributor it's connected to the 'A' terminal of the coil, and also to the ICM (ignitor).

There's a white/blue wire within the distributor, from the coil 'B' terminal to the ICM.

Yellow/green
This comes from the ECU (pin A21) & goes to the ICM. The ECU triggers the spark with this wire.

Blue
This comes from the ICM & goes to the tachometer, cruise, TCM(if auto), & the test tach. socket near the clutch MC.

Orange, shielded
CYP sensor -> ECU pin B11

White
CYP sensor -> ECU pin B12

Orange/blue, shielded
TDC sensor -> ECU pin B13

White/blue
TDC sensor -> ECU pin B14

Blue/green, shielded
CKP sensor -> ECU pin B15

Blue/yellow
CKP sensor -> ECU pin B16

Brown/black
Ground, also connected to the shields of the sensor signal wires. It's also ground for ECU, at pins A26 & B2.

----------------------

Any one or more of these wires could be messed up. Check that each one goes to the right place, & doesn't connect to ground anywhere. (Except the one that's supposed to be ground... make sure it's a good ground.)
