Sold-Out Acura NSX Type S Production Begins, Deliveries Set for 2022
Production of the Acura NSX Type S has begun at the brand’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio.
It’s been some time since the Acura NSX Type S was revealed back at Monterey Car Week, a supercar destined to bring even more performance and style to what is already a pretty special package. But the Acura NSX Type S is even more special because it is quite literally the model’s swan song, as 2022 represents the final year of production for the brand’s latest performance machine. Now, the beginning of the end has come, as the NSX Type S has entered production at the Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio, the brand has announced.
Acura will only build 350 units of the NSX Type S, and all of those were quickly spoken for when reservations opened up back in August. The company announced that all 350 units will be produced this year, making for a tidy and quick process in a world where automotive production, in general, has been severely hampered by supply chain issues.
The first two NSX Type S models rolled off the line at PMC finished in PMC’s exclusive Gotham Gray matte paint, which requires special handling and shipping techniques to ensure protection during transport to a dealer. Acura applies a protective film to vehicles painted this color, along with a thicker and softer covering for the transportation process, while those handling the cars have also received special training.
The Acura NSX Type S is easily distinguished from its “regular” brethren by its more aggressive styling, unique five-spoke wheels, Pirelli P-Zero tires, a retuned Adaptive Damper System, Type S decals, and a standard carbon-fiber roof. Under the optional carbon-fiber engine cover, the Type S touts the most powerful drivetrain in the brand’s history – a revised version of the NSX’s 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, paired with three electric motors, which cranks out a combined 600 horsepower and 492 pound-feet of torque.
The hybrid powertrain is mated to a 9-speed DCT for ultra-quick shifts, while torque-vectoring Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive helps put all that power to the ground effectively. Those that want even more performance can opt for the Lightweight Package, which adds carbon-ceramic brakes, a carbon-fiber engine cover, and a carbon-fiber interior package, which shaves 58 pounds off the car’s weight.
Thus, while the NSX will be going away for now or forever, at least it’s doing so with a bang, as they say.
