Render Shows The Civic EG Hatch We So Desperately Want

We wish this modern EG rendering was an actual thing, but a true hatchback Civic is just a dream.

Honda has given us some cool cars lately, but at the same time, they have taken away a lot of our favorites. We know that the two-door Civic is dropped, but that doesn’t stop some of us from thinking about what could be.

Top Gear Philippines took it upon themselves to reimagine the EG hatch. Their artist, Andrew Guerrero, shows us what it would look like had Honda continued to make it to this day.

Using styling from the next gen 2022 Civic, Guerrero takes the new reserved styling, and combines it with the EG’s distinctive hatch design. The rear window is recognizable as ever, and the overall silhouette is spot on for an evolution of the EG. The Civic’s more reserved styling makes the updated features play along with the overall shape of the car, without being gaudy or out of place. The hatch itself is arguably the best of the EG bunch, being a split hatch. And that’s repeated here for this render. Combine that with renders that have already been made for the new Civic on upgraded wheels, and this EG homage would be even better.

But it’s not just a render. Guerrero went through and described how Honda could actually build it. “Our modern EG hatch uses a shortened version of the 11th-gen Civic’s platform. We’ve trimmed about 76mm from the wheelbase,” Guerrero writes. He even goes as far as saying the split hatch would open in such a way that would allow a flat load floor in combination with the foldable rear seats.

Shorter wheelbase and a lighter overall package would surely make for a peppy combination. In their “imaginary launch,” Top Gear envisions the current Civic Si 1.5 turbo could power this hatch, but under the SiR moniker. Knowing that there’s one step left on the ladder does leave us with a cliffhanger, but Honda not making another hatchback is the real shame here. Perhaps if we ask and beg and plead…
