Carbon Fiber-Bodied FK8 Civic Type R

A major diet and a laundry list of aftermarket upgrades make this FK8 Civic Type R one of the coolest builds out there.

While the all-new FL5 gen Honda Civic Type R has gotten all the press lately, with reviewers lavishing it with praise for its more subdued looks and various other improvements, a handful of folks actually prefer its rawer, arguably more visceral predecessor, the FK8. The differences between these two cars are significant enough that this debate has essentially drawn a line in the sand among Civic Type R fans, but to us, having choices is never a bad thing. Regardless, for those that still have love for the FK8, the folks at throtl just finished building one of the coolest examples we’ve come across for one of their most recent giveaways.

In a recent video, throtl shows off their masterful creation and hands the keys over to the new owner, while also going over its extensive list of upgrades. Perhaps most notably, that includes a large array of carbon fiber bits and pieces throughout the entire car, starting on the outside, where you’ll find a host of Seibon goodies including its CV-style front grille, TA-style front lip, TSII hood, fender ducts, rear roof trim, an OEM-style rear spoiler center, and OEM-style side skirts.

The carbon fiber theme continues inside the cabin, where this Civic Type R has been fitted with a bevy of composite parts from Revel, including a carbon center dash cover with Alcantara, a center console side panel, dash cluster cover, A/C control panel cover and vent covers, and carbon fiber window switch panels, to boot.

Underneath, throtl enhanced their Type R by adding a set of KW ClubSport two-way dampers, as well as strut braces and sway bars from Cusco. The hot Honda rides on a set of  18×9.5-inch TSW Kemora wheels wrapped in 265/35/18 RT660 Falken tires, and it has also received a few performance upgrades in the form of a Hondata Flash Pro, MBRP exhaust, and the whole catalog of Mishimoto parts, including an intake, intercooler, and radiator.

The results of all that work, well, they speak for themselves, because this is one of the coolest FK8 Civic Type R builds that we’ve come across. Even without any crazy performance upgrades, we imagine that the weight loss it has incurred from its infusion of carbon fiber is more than enough to make it a heck of a lot of fun to drive – after all, it was already a pretty amazing car to begin with.
