Integra Type S to be Manual Only; More Powerful Than Civic Type R

We’ll see the full debut at the Long Beach Grand Prix in April, but the Integra Type S will be a serious machine.

No one will be calling the Integra Type R soft. No one. Why? Because by all means, it looks like the car will be even more impressive than the Civic Type R. That’s some high praise, considering the CTR’s track record. Road and Track has conformed the Integra will boast more power than the CTR. Little else is known so far. But alas, Acura has given us a little tease to hold us over for a few weeks.

This video shows the Civic Type R’s usual three-shooter tailpipe, and gives us a sound preview too. Though short in length, we hear a familiar 4-cylinder growl, with some nice cracks and burbles on throttle lift. Interestingly absent is any fun whoosh-y noises from the turbo, but we’re sure some aftermarket companies will be vying to satisfy your aural desires.

We expect that there’s going to be quite a few things different about the Type S versus the Type R. Sure, they share the same architecture, but we feel badge engineering won’t be at play here. The integra’s interior is already more upscale, and we expect specific touches like Alcantara may very well be in places like the headliner, steering wheel, seating surfaces, and more. We’re banking on that given J.D. Power is estimating the Type S to come in at around $49,000. But the one thing in common? You’ll have to row your own gears. Which is how all performance cars should be anyway.

In the teaser images also provided, we can see that the Type S will have a wider body than the standard Integra. It’s safe to assume the whole suite of CTR upgrades will be under the Acura’s skin. Wider wheels, upgraded suspension, bigger brakes. We can expect all of that. As opposed to the Civic, the Integra won’t be wearing any big wings. Again, these oblique images suggest a subtle decklid spoiler. Should an Integra Type R ever emerge, that may change.

The car’s official release will be at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, which begins April 14th. We’ll get to see it in all of its glory, along with other Honda powered IndyCars as they blast around the famous California street racing circuit.
