Default which tranny to go with????

Ok guys and gals. well to start off i'm building a d16z6 for boost ( i want to run anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds of boost) and i want to know which tranny is best to go with. The d16z6 ex/si tranny or the d16y7 dx tranny? Or is there anothoer tranny that is better? I personally was thinking the d16y7 dx tranny, since it has longer gears it will let the turbo spool longer and not run out of gear so quick. So i want to hear from the guys who have been though this stage already.

Pretty much. .009 difference in 2nd gear. Y8 has steel shift forks. Z6 has aluminum forks that love to break.

Go with the Y8, although my boosted Y8 went out pretty quick, so I got a DX and the gear ratios didnt make a huge difference at all, anyway after that tranny litarally stripped EVERY GEAR including reverse ( think the whole tranny just **** out ) I got a Z6 and never had any problems till my car got stolen! If you can though try and find a true JDM D15B tranny, they are the only single cam tranny that has factory LSD, hard to find but worth it.

Thats right i forgot about the jdm d15b tranny with lsd. but is that tranny cable or hydralic? also what was the fastest you got your single to run at the track and what setup did you have on it? (as in internals on the motor and what turbo, turbo manifold, etc etc)

I wouldn't run an OEM D LSD, they're pretty much useless. They're a viscous type LSD and their self contained. Once it gets too hot, it will function as an open diff and need to be replaced.

You could run syncromesh through it with oil cooler and it would help a lot. U can get a hydro one also. Never took my Y8 to the track, I boost my cars just for myself to drive around and have fun in. But I ran a .57 trim with a Ramhorn, 3IN exhaust all the way ( dont have emissions in oregon ) DSM 450s, RFL blow off, Converted to OBD1 and ran a chipped P28 tuned on uberdata at 8.7 PSI. Eventually swapped the turbo out for a garrett T3 Super 60, Id defiantly reccommend the Super 60. Top speed was around 130 im guessing, speedo stopped at 120MPH. But ive seen hatches with a similiar set ups at woodburn hit 12's

Why run Synchromesh? It is a 5w-30. When cold it's already too thin. Cooler won't do much when its a drag car.

... doesnt say anywere its a drag car, but if it is I see your point. As far as LSD is concerned your gonna be spending around 900 to 1200 for a good one ( which with 20PSI youll probably need one ) Hey aquafina I have a question, how long is an average tranny job to replace all the syncros? I have carbon coated ones that I want to have put into an LS tranny I have.

By drag car I mean any car that goes to a strip. Road race cars get their trans way hotter than even the Outlaw drag cars.

Any trans I build is at least an 8 hour job. Tear down, inspect, clean, blast case, mockup, check clearances, tear down again, some voodoo magic, assemble. Unless you want to hang out in JC for the day it wouldn't be something you can wait on.

Just curious. I have it all apart already, just dont have the patience to put it back togethor or the know how. but I would like to have a back up. So I have a J4D with LSD hooked up to my B16, now is that the same kinds LSD that a D series have? Or is it going to hold up? I have a 50 trim turbo running app 14PSI

If that case has the inked J4DLSD on it, then it is an ITR trans with an OEM helical LSD. Should hold up ok for you, though the ITR LSD isn't exceptionally strong like an MFactory or Quaife LSD. It will break eventually.

my other question is how many pounds of boost can someone push on a stock but rebuilt single(probably has no more then 10,000 miles on it)? car isn't daily driven but i don't want to blow the motor like with in a year, i want to make it last as long as i can until i can finish my other motor

Pounds of boost isnt really anything to consider when turboing, its all about HP numbers, you can run ( lets just say ) 20psi on a 14B turbo and make ( once again lets just say ) 300 WHP than you can get a .57 trim turbo and run only 10 PSI and make 300 WHP. A stock, but reliable single came you should try and stay in the 225-250 WHP range

I have a complete Jdm D15B Vtec engine & tranny that isnt lsd in my garage. I purchased engine and tranny together and ended up installing another engine in my car. From what i have heard it is rare to find a true lsd for the D15B. i will seperate if you are interested. I also have a new napa clutch with 4000 miles on it. $250 w/o clutch $350 with.
