Default need help!! Strange squealing noise from gsr motor?

Ok, I am not sure what is wrong with my car, but it has a strange whining/squeal noise that comes out of the right side of the motor during acceleration. The sound only comes with approx. 1/2 throttle in every gear, but it is more present with the larger gearing of 3-5 gear. As long as the motor is in gear with the load of the transmission engaged, it will make this noise. The sound has the same tone no matter what the rpm is, but you can vary the pitch with the amount of throttle applied. I thought it could have been the clutch, but the sound is louder without the intake cover off. I have a k&n filter on the intake with the resonator box removed. I know that in some hondas there are vacuum lines that leak air to the intake manifold during the lower rpms to reduce the sound of acceleration. I believe that I have a vacuum leak somewhere. Does anyone have this problem or have you ever heard it before? It is driving me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not a loud shrieking is it? If your alternator/power steering/AC belts are loose and/or wet, they will shriek/wail when you accelerate (usually only when they're cold).

Also, my D16 makes kind of a high-pitched whining noise that appears to be originating at the timing belt. I read on here somewhere that letting off a little bit of timing belt tension will aleviate that problem. However, i'm not so sure this is what your problem is, since you're saying its a squealing noise instead if a whine.

Just my edumucated guesses

did you get a new valve cover that exposes the timing belt? is it just the intake sucking in air?

have you checked your gearbox oil level?

I know that it is not the belts that are making the noise. In addition, the sound comes only out of the passenger side of the engine compartment. The sounds generally has the same tone, and only varies in volume depending on the throttle applied. With either full throttle or low throttle the car sounds fine, but somewhere in between the noise becomes audible.

When you say, "take the distributor off" are you referring to just the cap or the whole thing? How much freedom in the bearings should there be?

My timing belt was doing this yesterday when I over-tightened it.

My stock header did something similar to what you're describing - the infamous B-pipe rattle.

My passenger fender made a similar noise when I left out one of the clips that hold it in place upon reinstalling the fender.

My intake tubing was making a similar noise when I first installed it & it was rubbing against the frame.

My new header was making a similar noise as it rubbed the bottom of the oil pan.

My axle was making a similar noise when the inner joint was bad.

Get the idea? It could be damn-near anything. Here are a few Q's for you to answer to help us help you;
Did you do/have any work done, to the car prior to the noise?
Will the car produce the noise at all when NOT under load?
Did you inspect the motor mounts?
Did you inspect the timing belt?
Give us more info & your problem will be easier to diagnose.

A vacuum leak would **** up your idle. If you're idle is okay, you do not have a vacuum leak.

I have done nothing to the car over the last few months, and the car is stock other than a k&n air filter. I started hearing the noise about 2 months ago, and it became louder when I removed the intake cover. It got extremely annoying, so I put the cover back on. Slowly the noise got to the same level it was when I first took the cover off. I took the cover off again the other day when someone mentioned it may be a vacuum leak.

To remove the effect of the intake, I took it all off up to the tb, and the noise was still there. The noise only occurs while in gear, and is more prevelant in 2-4 gear. It only occurs when accelerating with approx 1/2 throttle. As soon as you let off, or vary the level, it goes away.

I checked everything for vibration, but I can't narrow it down. It is too high pitched and smooth to be something rubbing. It sounds more like bearings. However, the pitch never varies, 2000 or 7000 rpm, the sound is the same.

I will check the distributor, but I would think the sound would be present out of gear if it were that.

so if the pitch doesnt vary its obvously not a rotational noise?

or do you mean the tone doesnt vary...

where does the noise come from?

hold a screw driver against the different parts of your car like a stethoscope and find out where the noise comes from...

be carefull when doing this and make sure that you have fully chocked hte rear wheels - we dont want hte car coming off jackstands whilst the wheels are spinning...

HTH,

t..

The noise comes from the passenger side of the engine. The noise varies in resonation, but not the general pitch. When the noise starts and stops, it varies pitch slightly. However, with the throttle held down evenly, it will hold the sound at the same pitch the who time til you let off.

I can't trouble shoot but so much since it will only make the noise with load on the motor (i.e. going down the road)

I will try to go outside now and record the sound and post it here.

yeah record the sound and play it back through your radio (maybe you can reverse the polarity of your speakers) and it will cancel itself out

Does anyone know if GSR's still had the B-pipe problem in 98'? This is what it sounds like to me.

The sound is high pitched, kinda like the whine of a loose belt. It is on the upper passenger side, and it is not a rattle of anykind.

I was told by a Honda technician that it could be carbon deposits somewhere in the intake manifold stirring up air as it passes over with certain amounts of throttle. Therefore I sprayed two cans of intake cleaner through the throttle body, and the noise still continues. It is definately louder without the intake on, so I must be some kinda leak.

This is a brief video of what the sound is like. You can't hear it but so well, but it is the whinig sound in the back ground.
