Re: D16Y7 - gurgling noise and coolant loss

Cooling system was last bled when the coolant was flushed and replaced 11 months/21k miles ago.

No sign of any dampness on the passenger side carpet or the firewall behind the glove box and below...

Re: 1998 Honda Civic lx Tachometer Issues

The speed sensors are infamous for failing, and as replacing them is a lot easier and cheaper than taking the dashboard to bits and replacing the gauge, my inclination would be to start with that. ...

Hazardous recall

I'd say that this recall was pretty darn hazardous! On one occasion, I stalled at 70mph on the I-10. Thankfully it was in the middle of the night on a virtually empty road, but if that had been in...

D16Y7 - overheating, gurgling noise and coolant loss

When the engine gets pretty hot (usually shortly after slowing down after a long freeway stretch, or in prolonged traffic jams), I hear a high pitched gurgling noise coming from what sounds like...

Re: Sudden shut off problem

I had that problem on my '99 Civic LX (D16Y7 engine). It turned out to be the ignition switch, which was the subject of a recall (Honda service bulletin 02-231) in the early '00s. When I contacted...

D16Y7 - auto transmission won't shift from P to D after "cool" start

Over the last few days a weird problem has developed. I usually fill up at a gas station on my outward commute to work. This is 1.2 miles from home, and so I start the car from cold after a night...

PCV valve access

The PCV valve is a pig to get at with the oil filter in place: I'd suggest replacing it during an oil and filter change, with the filter removed. Without the oil filter in the way it's not too hard...

Re: 99 Honda Civic LX Low idle after warm up

I had the same problem, also on a '99 LX (D16Y7 engine). It turned out to be the IACV, which was beyond cleaning: one of the vanes was deformed at the edge. Replacing it solved the problem. ...

Poor gas mileage

I don't like the sound of 20 MPG. My D16Y7 (in a '99 Civic LX) has 151k miles on the clock, and delivers between 29-35 per fillup (between 10 and 11 gallons per 300 miles ish). I commute four days...

Noisy

Just a slight howl and fluid gurgling noise what at full lock or close to it, which has now gone.

Ironically, this whole saga started with a conversation about whether additives did any good or...

Re: Suspect Xado power steering additive has damaged my pump (D16Y7)

The power steering behaved itself without any further stiffness throughout the journey home. I think it must have been an airlock, and not any solid object causing the blockage. The cap was still...

Re: Suspect Xado power steering additive has damaged my pump (D16Y7)

The sheet that came with the Xado said "Note: if fluid is opaque, old and contaminated, REPLACE fluid before treating!". My fluid was certainly opaque, almost certainly very old and probably...

Power steering fluid life expectancy

I find Honda's "good for the life of the car" recommendation (and the absence of any published procedure for flushing the fluid, even in the Haynes manual) weird, too.

The fluid I flushed out of...

Xado-massochism?

Driving back from a lunchtime meeting I made a U-turn, during which the steering suddenly righted itself. The resistance suddenly went, and the steering felt normal afterwards. Furthermore, I'm no...

Suspect Xado power steering additive has damaged my pump (D16Y7)

'99 Civic LX.

Following a recommendation from a friend who said that this stuff had stopped a power steering squeal totally, I put some of this stuff...

o2 Sensor

Hmm ... the only thing that comes immediately to mind is the air filter.

As for my problem, a new o2 sensor solved it. My local O'Reilly had a Bosch 13007 for $40 which they said I could return...

Rough idle: the IACV was the problem

I removed the throttle body, cleaned the carbon deposits from the the plate and all other surfaces with isopropanol and a shop towel, lubricated the spring with some lithium grease, replaced the idle...

Manual gearbox

I haven't worked on a manual Civic. I'm guessing that they will have a similar VSS in the gearbox, but which only drives the speedometer (i.e. the ECU doesn't so anything with the data from it other...

It's the speed sensor

Yes, it should do.

The speed sensor screws into the top of the transmission (near the dipstick). It measures rotation speed of the axle, and from that tells the ECU what the road speed of the car...

Re: 2000 Civic dx 4dr chugging at idle horrible fuel milage

As I've recently discovered with my '99 LX (D16Y7), rough idle faults appear to be very common in 1990s Civics. They are also very difficult to diagnose, because here are many possible causes, or...

Transmission speed sensor

That would suggest that the vehicle speed sensor has had it - full explanation here.

I'd guess that this is consistent with there being something seriously and fundamentally wrong with your...

It wasn't as simple as cleaning the primary O2 sensor

The same thing happened on my commute this morning: the CEL lit up 2-3 minutes after reaching freeway cruising speed, the fault being P0131.

I've now ordered a complete new idle air control valve....

Exhaust manifold

Many thanks. I've just taken the top heat shield off and looked at the manifold, and cannot see any signs of any cracking (looked with a magnifying glass for hairline cracks, too). I also removed...

D16Y7 rough idle and O2 sensor problem

I've been a long-time lurker here and have checked out previous threads thoroughly to see if anyone else has had this problem, but can't find anything relevant.

A few weeks ago, a low speed, rough...
