Default 2000 Civic dx 4dr chugging at idle horrible fuel milage

Hey guys I'm trying to diagnose a problem here and would love some feed back.
so I have a 2000 civic dx 4door and its chugging at idle and getting horrible fuel milage what I'm wondering as this is my first civic I've had a similar problem with my old mazda b2200 and it turned out after lots of new parts to just be a faulty MAF sensor could this be the same issue?

As a point of order, out cars don't have MAFs, they have MAPs. Similar raison d'etre, different method.

As I've recently discovered with my '99 LX (D16Y7), rough idle faults appear to be very common in 1990s Civics. They are also very difficult to diagnose, because here are many possible causes, or combinations of causes. From all the reading and experimenting I've done, it seems that a rough idle fault could be caused by any one of the following (in random order, not of probability):
  • Failing ignition components (plugs, wires, dissie cap, rotor and/or coil)
  • Failed PCV valve
  • Clogged air filter
  • Clogged fuel filter
  • Clogged oil filter
  • Low oil level (not one I'd have suspected, but a common cause according to Eric the Car Guy)
  • Throttle position sensor
  • MAP sensor
  • Idle air control valve (if fitted)
  • Fast idle thermal valve (if fitted)

There is a tutorial and video on Honda rough idle problems here. He suggests that the PCV valve is a likely culprit when a rough idle is accompanied by increased fuel consumption.

The way I've been trying to troubleshoot my car is to start with the components that are cheap and easy to replace (air filter, PCV valve, plus, dissie cap, throttle position sensor), and then moving on to the bits that cost $20 plus and/or take significant time to replace. I'm now down to the idle air control valve as the only thing left on that list that hasn't been checked out and/or replaced, and will be doing that over the weekend.
