Ball joint's are $21.xx at AutoZone, and very easy to install. Just put a new one in, and the worst thing that happens if it isn't the problem is you're out $21.xx and an hour of your time.

As previously stated the humming noise you hear in idle that goes away when you apply the clutch pedal is the throwout bearing. Make sure that you change that also when you install the new clutch kit.

The car could have a salvage title for 1000 different reasons, most likely theft. Either way the car has a K20R with a lsd trans, and a hell of a turbo...
