Re: The Official Formula 1 2011 season Thread
I dont think this will be the one to watch. I think the worst team mates are going to be massa and fernando. I don't know if anyone saw the first F1 debrief, but i'm with varsha, Lewis is the one to watch out for this year. altough would love to see massa get another shot at the title, i think his chance has come and gone.

Re: The Official Formula 1 2011 season Thread
Italian tyre manufacturers Pirelli, embarking on the first season of a three-year agreement to supply Formula One, have revealed the colours that will distinguish the six different types of rubber that will be used throughout 2011.
Each type will carry its own distinct colouring on the Pirelli and PZero logos affixed to the sidewall. Under the sport's rules, only two compounds of slick tyre - known as the prime and the option - will be used for each race. In addition to this, intermediate and wet tyres can be fitted if it rains.
The six colours are as follows:
Wet - orange
Intermediate - light blue
Super soft - red
Soft - yellow
Medium - white
Hard - silver
In order to make the differences between the prime and option tyre more pronounced, Pirelli's strategy is to offer a step of at least one compound between the tyres nominated for each race. If the track conditions require it though, this strategy may be revised.
The prime and option tyres for the first three Grands Prix of the year - Australia, Malaysia and China - will be hard and soft compounds, meaning that silver and yellow tyres will be first to make an appearance in Melbourne.
"We' re very excited by the prospect of returning to Formula One for the first time in 20 years, and we're aiming to be a proactive and colourful partner in Formula One,” commented Pirelli's Motorsport Director Paul Hembery. “So what better way to symbolise this than a brightly coloured selection of Pirelli logos to run on the sidewalls? These will enable both live and television audiences to tell at a glance who is on what compounds, which will be vital knowledge as tyres are set to form a key part of race strategy this year."
Pirelli is no stranger to brightly-coloured tyres: when the firm was previously involved in Formula One, the Benetton team was supplied with multi-coloured rubber to run as part of their ‘United Colors’ campaign back in 1986.

Anybody going to Australia for the opener? I'm considering trying to get last minute tickets...but I may hold out for either Canada or England instead.

Re: The Official Formula 1 2011 season Thread
Too hard to say this year. Merc is looking really good, as does RBR, and Ferrari. McLaren is coming with a update package, but Renault, Force, Williams can come with some good pace. Ahhh!!!
My Guess:
1. Fernando Alonso
2. Nico Rosberg
3. Mark Webber
4. Michael Schumacher
5. Sebastian Vettel
6. Rubens Barrichello
Anyone play in a fantasy league for F1?

Re: The Official Formula 1 2011 season Thread
I downloaded the F1 Android app, it's pretty cool in that it tells you the times of the practices, quali, and race in your local time. The only problem is that they forgot about days. It thinks that the first practice will be on Friday at 18:30 PST, when it's actually Thursday at 18:30 PST. It says the race is going to be starting on Sunday at 23:00 PST LOL.
They do have the countdown working correctly though.

IMO the pecking order is:
Red Bull
(gap)
Ferrari
Mercedes
(gap)
Lotus Renault
McLaren
(gap)
Toro Rosso
Sauber
Force India
Williams
(gap)
Lotus
Virgin
(HUGE gap)
HRT
Race results:
1. Vettel
2. Webber
3. Alonso
4. Rosberg
5. Schumacher
6. Button (2 words: tire management)
7. Heidfeld
8. Massa
9. Hamilton
10. Buemi
Anyone thinking RBR is going to have reliability problems should look at how much testing they did. I hope I don't regret saying that.

I guess the cars aren't as crap as everyone predicted. One thing about Macca is that they can make and deploy improvements very fast. Looks like they're going in the right direction.

Re: The Official Formula 1 2011 season Thread
During the post-qualifying interview, the interviewer mentioned that Vettel didn't use KERS during qualifying. Hamilton just shook his head.
I hope this is Webber's last year. There is no reason it shouldn't be a RBR front row.
1:29.376 would be the 107% rule applied to Vettel's pole time. If that had been in Q1, neither Virgin car would be starting tomorrow.

Re: The Official Formula 1 2011 season Thread
It wasn't mentioned in the speed airing but on the BBC version Hamilton allegedly had a problem with his KERS and did not use it on his lap either.
Also found this kinda funny

Massa had the fastest lap... was wondering if anybody knows where I can see a chart will all drivers fastest laps
Vettel started where he left off... but the season just started! We all know how things can change and I'm sure Alonso will get into the groove very soon...

Horner: Red Bull did not have KERS

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner revealed after Sebastian Vettel's season-opening victory in Melbourne that the team did not have KERS on its RB7s from Saturday onwards.
There was speculation after Vettel took pole position that the team was planning to use an innovative 'start-only' KERS, but Horner told the BBC that the team had been concerned with reliability on its conventional system and merely opted not to run it.
"We haven't had KERS on at all this weekend," said Horner. "We didn't want to tell anybody, but looking at the start ... It didn't look like we needed it.
"We were a bit nervous about telling everybody before the race. We ran it on Friday and we weren't happy with the reliability, we felt it was a potential risk, so we took it off both cars and didn't race it at all this weekend."
"We made a decision with the KERS, he added. "It's quite a complex system, it's an interesting technology, but Adrian [Newey] being Adrian would not compromise the car around the system so it has had to fit into his aero shape and that's presented some bigger challenges.
"But the guys have done a fantastic job in Milton Keynes and testimony to their hard work that we've turned out and been reliable and dominated the race."
Horner said that he was delighted with Vettel's dominant throughout the Australian GP weekend culminating in a crushing victory for the world champion over the rest of the field.
"It's been a fantastic day for Sebastian and the team to start this championship, on different tyres with the regulation changes we've had," he said. "He was dominant yesterday and totally dominant today as well. It's a shame for Mark [Webber], but a great team result."
Webber finished a distant fifth, having employed a three-stop strategy to Vettel's two. The Australian was outpaced all weekend by his team-mate, and pulled off the track at the end of the pitlane as soon as he finished the race.
"Well it's a very unusual gap to see such a big difference between the two guys," said Horner of Webber's pace compared to Vettel. "We need to go through things with a fine toothcomb and understand where those differences are.
"Mark's performance today - he was very hard on the tyres that created more degradation. We need to find out if there's something perhaps in the car that is contributing to that. We couldn't find it yesterday, but we'll certainly have a very, very good look before Malaysia."

One race... lets not over exaggerate here!
Before we can really judge anything give it a couple of races to really see the big picture...
