Ok. I bought a mugen style polyurithane front lip for my civic and the paint is starting to peel like in chips all over the place, all the way down to the poly. Its only been on there like 3 months! I haven't hit anything or even drug on anything. We first sprayed it with 3M adhesive promoter and then done base coat clear coat. BUT, we did not primer it b/c a friend of mine said there would be no need. So what are there like a special kind of paint for poly?? Or should I have used enamel instead of base coat clear coat. Please help! Thanks

did you clean it with warm soap and water before paint? did you scuff it up good before?
you dont really need primer but i woulda used it anyway and I seal everything i paint too

yeah, we sanded it down pretty good. Do you guys think enamel paint with primer would work better?

sand it down pretty good as sand it down smooth as glass pretty good or 600 grit pretty good?

what exact stuff did you use?

enamel works great on metal, not so good on plastic.

You need to use plastic prep. without it the mold release agents stay in the plastic and you just sand them in deaper. Even after using warm soapy water.
The plastic prep removes the mold release agents and softens the plastic a bit so that when you scuff it, it actually stops being shiny.

So what you should use is warm soapy water. Plastic prep. Scuff with a grey scratch pad or 500. Adheasion promoter, sealer and bc/cc.
Also use a flex additive to stop major chipping also.

i'd bet you chipping came from bugs or rocks and it probly because there is an elastic add. for plastic bumpers. its kinda like rubberized paint is the best way i can explane it. if you have ever done a rc car body with normal paint the same thing happens thats why there is special paint for those and the same goes for plastic bumpers/lips

Care to explain/recommend on this "special paint"?

its not like a special brand or something its an additive that make the paint flexible after it dries so that if you scrape the bumper or bottom out and it it or rocks and stuff the most that would happen is a scrach or small chip.

where can i get flex additive and will it work for rattle can paints? planning on doing a big project with my bike!

Given you have to mix in the flex agent b4 you spray it, i dont think its gonna work with rattle can , unless you have some way of getting it into the can

its not adding the flex agent that is making it chip and stuff. Its not plastic prepping it, and washing it. the flex additive is for parts the flex alot. The problem is that the mold agent is trapped in the plastic and realesing under the paint causing the paint to peel and delam from the pieace. also the quality of paint could be to blame for some of this. i would only use a name brand paint that offers its own plastic cleaner and adehision promoter. this should fix the problem once you sand off the other material.
