Transmission Installation Problems
I'm having trouble with my transmission install. I bought a transmission jack from HF. It's works beautifully. The problem is there is not enough room in the engine bay to position it. You have to do weird angles and whatnot to even try and get the transmission in there to even bother with jacking it up. My driveway is on a slight incline. One jackstand is at 4 and the other is at 3. I'm kinda afraid to go any higher because of it slipping off the jackstand and falling which is something I don't need to do another repair. So, with that said I can't put the transmission on the jack on the outside and just simply roll it back under there. I can't get on my back and pick it up like I'm bench pressing due to it being really heavy. I really have no one to help me out.
Any tips would be very helpful, because I wanna try and avoid breaking anything on my car like driveshaft, transmission and clutch.
PS. I did have it on one time, but I thought the throwout bearing came off the fork and had to remove the transmission to check and ever since I couldn't get it back on and it slipped off the transmission jack, lucky I could pull it up and ease it onto the ground.
I just can't seem to get the transmission to line up. Before I installed the transmission. The clutch is aligned correctly. I can get it close to the block, but no more than half an inch to an inch.
Please don't flame or anything. I'm trying my best.

Re: Transmission Installation Problems
thats how I do mine....just manning up on it and lifting it up.But you almost need another person up top to help lift and align it as its going on the input shaft. Its a bitch man, but Ive done mine 3 times and never used a tranny jack. But that lil floor jack with a piece of wood will help u get the tranny started up, but it has to be manuvered in from the ground anyway. Try to get a buddy to help you just to get it lined up correctly and one bolt started from the top, otherwise its goona kill you by yourself. Good luck bro

I have taken off the rear and front mounts, the angle rod that goes from front cross member to right control arm disconnect the header from exhaust. lower the engine slide the transmission on and then just reattach everything correctly.

I was thinking about taking out the rear mount also, but I kinda scared to do it without an engine hoist that it will fall and break something along the way. xD I removed the front mount and front frame bar that the mount attaches on and it makes it easier to get the transmission into the bay. Just for some reason the stupid thing doesn't want to slide fully flushed.

Re: Transmission Installation Problems
did you at rotate the trans at all. sometimes the threads dont line up exactly when you try to install it. That actually maybe your hold up if its not going flush. Just kind of rotate the trans on the shaft left to right (looking at the engine the trans side) and that might help you get it in.

Are the splines on the shaft and clutch disc engaged? Did you lube them? The way it's sitting in the pic looks right, the end of the shaft doesn't stick out a whole lot since it sits in the pilot bearing in the flywheel. That being said the disc should slide freely on the shaft splines.
Like the others said, it's way easier with a buddy helping up top to line things up.

If you can get it 1/2 inch or so away, just start the upper bolts and use them to keep it all aligned, and wiggle it a bit, maybe turn the flywheel and see if it shifts into place. Oh and lots of Honda Urea grease in the splines makes this go as smooth as possible.
I am a big guy, so I just "bench press" the tranny into place and wiggle until it slides home haha.

Sometimes it takes some fiddling, and can be frustrating, but it will eventually go. The feeling is always good haha. Just think, this is simple, try an awd Subaru tranny!

Re: Transmission Installation Problems
I just wanted to get some opinions before I put the clutch back onto the flywheel and then the pressure plate. I am putting the clutch correctly on the flywheel, so I know that's not the problem. It's just annoying having to put and take off the transmission so much, especially when I get so close to installing it, because the side near the firewall will not move close enough to get bolts to go in. But the front bumper side goes close.

Get some one to help you take a pic and put it in here. We might be able to give you a better idea of what maybe the actual problem

Re: Transmission Installation Problems
Yeah, I greased it up and the inside of the clutch too and no go. I got the correct clutch part number it shows on the Exedy site. 24 spline. Same as my old clutch.
Yeah, the splines are all in the grooves. I just thought the clutch was suppose to slide up and down on the transmission shaft and that was the reason why it wasn't going in, because it didn't slide up and down on it freely like the old clutch does. This is my first clutch install btw.

It is supposed to slide freely but when everything is all bolted together, there is actually very little movement on the shaft. It feels like you are moving the pressure plate a long way away from the disc due to the pedal travel but it's actually just releasing pressure enough for the disc to spin freely of the engine.
Did I word it right?

Re: Transmission Installation Problems
Yeah I understand how the clutching system works. I had contacted Exedy and they said it should slide on the mainshaft freely. I guess that's why my transmission didn't get flushed onto the block, so I order another kit, but went with Stage 1 rather than OEM.
I just gotta learn not to **** up this next clutch that should be coming in Thursday. The problem is I will be doing it myself. As no one else knows anything about transmission installation, especially a manual.

Re: Transmission Installation Problems
In my experience, the first time i replacedmy clutch what i thought was aligned wasnt enough. Like someone said throw the top bolts in and then lift the backof the tranny. I bet it slides in.

This may be a stupid question, sorry if this offends you, but you never know, you didnt leave the clutch installation tool on there right?? That would impede the process a bit

Re: Transmission Installation Problems
But I managed to get the transmission on after 10+ tries. xD I had to replace the new OEM clutch first. xD Managed to get a Stage 1. Only problem is I had to take the slave cylinder off the line to get the slave cylinder line sorta into position and whatnot. I put them back together and will have to wait for my new bolts to come in the manual to finish the rest of the install. I need to test and make sure I can engage the clutch before I put everything back together. I hope I don't have to pull off the transmission again >.<
I thought about some advice I read somewhere to rotate the engine so it can line up. It lined up the first time and just slipped in. I managed to get a bolt to thread in somewhat. So I put another bolt in above the starter and one behind the oil pan. Managed to tighten them down with no problems and no fighting it to tighten up. I rotated the engine again to make sure it rotates and the flywheel rotate also and not just be stuck and it rotates fine. I do get the issues rotating the engine due to the spark plugs being in, but other than that no problems rotating. So, hopefully I am doing something right, eh?
I'll be able to try and get the slave cylinder back on and the shift cables Tuesday to test if it will engage the gears. If that goes good, then I can try and put my new axles in and go try and drive the car. Only problem is my car will more than likely be dead due to the battery being out of the car for 1 1/2 months. I didn't have all the tools at the time and had to get money to get em.

Re: Transmission Installation Problems
For future reference, when I do a trans I rest it on a sealed box full of scrap paper so you can line up the bolt holes pretty close before even needing to manhandle it into place. Just have the trans in position on the ground, have someone from above lift, and another person slide the box under it. I use a box because it has some give and lets you wiggle the trans as much as you need to. Usually works much easier than a trans jack.
