Default Symptoms of a bad distributor

can someone just give me a runthrough of a bad distributor and how i can test it? thanks for your time.

take off the dist. cap, if there is oil in the cap the bearings are probably bad, or is it the bearing gasket, can't remember. if the cap is off and the rotor or the contacts on the cap are cut or damaged the dist. is probably bad. try changing the cap and rotor, fairly cheap, i got mine at napa for like 30 for both and found out the dist. was bad.

I have heard that red dust inside the cap is a sure sign it's on it's way out. But that's just what I heard.

A squealing noise from the area can also be a sign.

i can vouche for the red dust...mine was hesitating and boggin ...replaced it and it was fine no more red dust

take out the distributor. if the rotor piece that fits into the cam is hard to turn, then its bad.... it should move freely.

If you're talking about the rotor, it shouldn't be easy to turn... it's driven by the cam correct?

not to sure but if i remeber coreectly its a componet going bad or breaking down .. in side the cap...since its enclosed it stays in there ....

yes, its driven by the cam. if you arnt able to move the rotor with your hand... then its bad.

but if its connected to the cam then you wont be able to turn it ....youll have to take it off and see
