Default alignment of the intake cam and distributor?

1)should the female part of the intake cam and the male part of the distributor be perfectly flush when put back together?cause i cant get them to do that

2)also should the key grooves for the cam gears on the shafts be facing straight up and downwhen put back in or are they slightly facing eachother?
thanks in advance + + =

I assume your working on a DOHC engine, can you be a little more specific and provide what engine you are working on?

1st gen b16a. when you install the cams first you set the #1 piston at TDC then you position the cams so there are no open valves ,right? now, there is two slots on the end of the intake cam,and on the distributor there is two teeth that fit in those slots, correct? those teeth should fit in those slot perfectly ,no?there is were my problem is,the cams are seated perfectly and it appears by looking at those slots that it needs another 3/16 to be flush.does that make any sense

before u attemp anything else do this...
rotate the 2 nipples of the dizzy 180 degrees
for example.... rotate it half turn and try again;... they are one way only.. so if u have it 180 deg away(1/2 way) it will not fit.... it happened to me before...
