Default Worth it to Turbo D16Y8 Automatic?

Hi,

I have been reading a ton about cars and turbo and have a question.

Is it worth it to Turbo my 1997 Honda Civic EX (D16Y8)?

I would be fine with 200-300hp on it. 200hp would be fine. How much would it cost for a Turbo system? $2-$4k?

I still would like to get bushings replaced and some Koni/GC coilovers before the Turbo. $1k?

This car is basically my daily driver, I just want a little kick to it so it's not so slow. I don't plan to race this or bring it on the track.

I am saving to get a better car for track/autocross car.

What do you think?

not worth it at all. There is no way to tune the auto, and it will not hold up.

You won't get anywhere near 200hp out of it.

turbo an auto? no, just, no. You could attempt to run a different fuel map on the ECU but it's useless. Do a manual swap (could be done for cheap for a SOHC) and go from there.

People have done it. I wouldn't but not for the measly amount of power you'd get out of it.

i know of a few faster boosted automatic cars (non-Honda) that are pretty fun for what they are, Subaru makes a few.

Civic automatics are totally different beasts than most other transmissions out there.

High Stall Converter! It's not that bad of an idea..just do it for the hell of it. Might wanna piggy-back the ecu and get it tuned though

I would just use the money to swap your car to 5spd and then maybe boost. No sense of having an auto civic that's turbo. Low boost and a 5spd swap would be a good daily but no where near 200hp unless you upgrade some things

The motor can easily handle 200WHP. The transmission will blow up, though. If you just want a daily driver with a little more kick and minimal work, go pick up a better daily driver. Factory boosted automatics also exist, if you don't want to deal with a standard transmission on your daily commute.

If you actually want more kick out of it, convert it to manual before boosting it, unless you enjoy trying to rebuild an automatic transmission every few months. Been there, done that, believe me when I say you don't want to boost an automatic Honda.

There is a reason Honda drag cars are manual and not auto like the v8 boys and there powerglide ect transmissions. The way they are constructed doesn't allow them to handle much additional HP. If your daily has to be auto get a different car or I think they made a jdm gsr auto.... Not 100% sure on that though so do some research.

contrary to some of the above posts, an auto can be done..

will a stock one blow up? - guaranteed
can you rebuild the converter for higher stall rate - yes!

search around.. ive seen a site or 2 that rebuilds honda slushbox's for boost.

Its probably cheaper and easier to swap to a manual, but yes, anything can be done when u throw enough money at it.
