Default What kind of alternator to get?

I have a 97' with 75k miles and I just figured I would get a new alternator cause my old one has been abused, and I'm going to put another system in. I'm not really looking for an upgraded alternator just basically one equivalent to stock.

Im kinda confused tho... I call up a local shop and he quotes me 300.00 but at Pep Boys I can get a BOSCH for 110.00? The Bosch are re-manufactered (im not really sure what that means...) Does anyone have a Bosch Re-man alternator on here? Anyone know any good ones to buy? Are all the alternators remanufacterd (the aftermarket ones) ?

I used one before on my old Accord... I had 2 amps in the car at the time, total watts was over 1600, and it worked fine during the last 4 years that I had the car.

The cool thing also I forget to mention is they offer lifetime warranty, you bring it back they'll give u a brand new one. How hard is it to put in an alternator, worth it to DIY? or pay a shop?

explain this logic to me again...

You have a perfectly good alternator but you're getting a new one, **** I'll give you my address and you can send me your old one!

My engine has been abused, buy you don't see me replacing it...

i have 160K on the stock alternator, and i am runnign a HUGE system and i dont have any electrical problems at all

and your alternator doesnt just crap out, the engine still turns the pulley which makes power to charge the battery, it just wont do it as well. When lights start to flicker when you have no system thats when u know u need a new alternator

I can't begin to tell you how many comebacks I've had after installing a Bosch alternator. Something about them just isn't right. I'd say at least 45% of the installs have come back. We've since switched and started using Denso. Not much price difference and no comebacks.

is there some sort of aftermarket alternator that is worth buying? Someone told me once that the higher power aftermarket types are only really necessary for huge built systems, so i think a Denso O.E replacement is best.

The Accord i have comes with a Denso as O.E, so it would be the best alternative, right?

Oh, how hard is the D.I.Y on an alternator? Anyone?

yo 97 if you do the work yourself and dont mind than put a bosch alt by the way the honda factory are also reman alternators but from past experience they last a lot longer than bosch ,,so if you have to pay the mechanic it will cost you more money in the long run because they want to be paid everytime they have to replace it

I've never seen a used alternator (never used a rebuilt OEM) that is worth a DAMN from any brand for any make/model despite any warranty...and I've worked in the auto parts business. You're better off buying new IMO (unless rebuilt OEM is really any good). You really do get what you pay for.

And if you think you're gonna instantly get stranded on the side of the road when your alternator goes out you're an idiot. On a good battery and full charge you can run a 4 cyclinder for close to an hour depending on how many times you start it up, headlights, accessories, etc. And if you do get stranded, give it a good charge and then you can get further down the road. I drove my car around for two weeks like that until I got my next paycheck.

Amen.

Bosch in Honda = Mexico Built for GM, sold to Honda. (GM parts bin)
Denso = JDM y0....hecho en Japone. (or at least parts sourced from Japan)

As a sidenote...all the 6th gen accord alternator problems I'm aware of have been with Bosch units. Go figure.

I've noticed the same thing about Bosch alternators, but I just figured it was only for 6th gen units. When my alternator went out on my current car (Bosch, '99 Accord), I went to the junkyard and picked up a used Denso unit for $40. I figure that even if it goes out, I can replace it twice w/o spending what it would cost for a new or remanufactured unit. It's been 3 years and ~100,000 miles now on the used alternator with no problems.

I really don't see the need for high power alternators, unless, like you said, you're running a crapload of electrical equipment. I've known plenty of audio guys running extremely high-powered systems on stock alternators w/o any issues. Replacing an alternator yourself is fairly easy. If you have basic knowledge of a car, you should be able to do it yourself fine.

damn, see, i wouldnt mind throwing in a performance alternator, but then is it really worth it...i dont think so.

but in any case, here is the website of a company that comes so highly recommended...

http://www.raceproven.com/

every single starter, alternator etc... they make are made by hand and their reputation is second to none. Check it out if you are looking for some serious reliability.

I wonder, see, if you get a performance starter or alternator, what plus does a performance starter give you? smoother starts? i dont get it, anyone?

Anyone here tried getting the NAPA brand alternator? I've had their alternator for my other cars but not my Honda and just wondering how their brand stack up against the others (Kragen, Pepboys, Autozone, etc..)???

the aftermarket units at most of these places are usually either the Bosch or the Denso.
