Testing AEM EMS out of car?
My AEM EMS will be arriving this week, as it is used I would like to test it just to be sure it connects, etc.... Guy I got it from said he pulled it out of a working car and its flawless, I just like to double check.
As I'm in the middle of a build I don't exactly have the ability to just throw it in a car. I have a complete engine harness, I figured I could plug the ems up to a harness and hook it up to one of my spare batteries.
What would I then need to connect?
Power Source 1 (+12v switched)
Power Source 2 (+12v switched)
Voltage Back up (Permanent +12v)
Or will the ems read/write with just the battery connected since the Voltage Backup should already be powered?
I have searched with no luck
Thanks

Used? Why not buy new?

Also, this belongs in the "Engine Management" section and not the "Forced Induction"...

and i dont need a simulator... I simply want to be able to read/write the ecu while its not in the car

Power and ground should work for it.
I use an aem fic and you dont even need that to read/write to it. It takes power from the usb for that.

Re: Testing AEM EMS out of car?
So you want to simulate the ecu being in the car without a simulator.
Well not only will you need 12v inputs but also a ground is usually needed in direct current applications.
That should turn it on but then what?
It might have a bug in the actual software that you will neever know about untill you use either a simulator or actual car with all the inputs and ouputs connected.
Or now that I think of it are you trying to just power it on to connect a laptop or computer to it?

Yup, just trying to connect it to my laptop to make sure the software can connect to and read/write the ecu. Thats it. Its supposedly grounded already via the harness, as well as already having the voltage backup permanently supplied through the harness. I just think I need to give +12v to the switchable power inputs but im not 100%

Is the harness grounded? Next to the fan switch connector is the main ground ring terminal.
Voltage back up comes from the same 12v source as the igp1 and 2 12v inputs.
What harness? You could just apply voltage to igp1 and 2 but to do it without cutting and splicing wires I need to know what harness your using. Obd1 or 2

Re: Testing AEM EMS out of car?
Well i just remembered i could call aem lol. all i have to do is give 12v power to one of the 12v switched power inputs and a ground to the main ground pin and i can connect and read/write without using my harness.
plus they are still doing the upgrade program so i can send my 30-1000 box in (hey it was free lol) and they'll upgrade it to a series 2 for less than a used series 2 and I'll have a new unit with a warranty from aem

I don't understand why they have two 12+ power sources when you only need one... weird.. maybe its for redundancy
im wondering if with the harness plugged in I can get base sensor readings from things like IAT, TPS, MAP, etc.

Details? How much is that? I haven't really been able to log easily as it seems my comm port always drops out on my series one. I bought a laptop with a serial port specifically to avoid problems I had with pcmcia and usb adapters. Its better but not reliable enough.

Re: Testing AEM EMS out of car?
He quoted me 720 with return shipping
they upgrade your existing.unit to a new series 2 so you have all of the series to features, coil drivers, and the extra inputs/outputs etc. whatever the series 2 has you get.. plus you get a new full warranty from aem

Re: Testing AEM EMS out of car?
The serial on mine is triple lol. and its a decent deal too, as I can't find a used series 2 for anything under 900+ and most of them don't have a valid warranty... so you automatically save money if you ever have any issues.
