Cam Gear Explosion, Any Ideas?
Well, its that time of the year, my car finally got pulled out of the garage! Ive run about 3 tanks through her and shes been feeling pretty "ok" until now, only other issue was a broken downpipe due to a little rust and age, that was easily fixed.
cars running only 4 psi currently until i retune, im not comfortable with how it feels during daily driving conditions atm, and i want it mint before i push her back up to 18lbs.
setup:
d16y8 block
wiseco 9:1's
Eagle rods
arp studs
block gaurd
d16z6 head
skunk2 cam
ksm valves / springs / retainers
venom intake
bbk 62mm tb
***aem tru-time cam gear***
Problem:
I was screwing around with my buddy in his 350z down the freeway doing about 110ish in 5th, 3/4 throttle just seeing how much giddy up the z had on me at 4lbs at high speeds. We pulled into a gas station for about 10 minutes where i let the car idle and it idles just fine except it got a little hot probably 230-240 for about 2 minutes (it doesnt like to stay at running temp after i beat on it, it always heats up and im thinking its a headgasket issue and i was planning on swapping that out this weekend anyway) after that i made it to the first stop sign which was about 500ft pretty much idled to it because of a truck stop, made it to next stop sign, same distance same load, then the 3rd, following a semi truck in 2nd gear at 15mph and 13" of vacuum i heard it, it was a nasty grinding noise under my hood. turned the car off instantly, jumped out and popped the hood to find that my cam gear exploded right off the head.
the belt didnt break... which amazes me lol, but the only thing i can think that would have caused this is my entire head siezing? but after pulling the valve cover everything looks perfect, no damage, no warping, there was plenty of oil etc...
any ideas? im pretty sure my valves are screwed, unless jesus was inside my motor protecting them as the pistons attacked them.

I'v heard of the AEM timing gears the bolts in them loosen themselves up from the virbration and since there is only 3 bolts that hold them on, as I recall, and people run into this.

Re: Cam Gear Explosion, Any Ideas?
Only thing I can think of is something obviously siezed up, or it sounds crazy but possible the bolts came loose and somehow sent the cam gear crashing against itself so hard it just sheared itself off, unlikely but who knows. If this was the case I would think something in the head siezed and the rotation of the crank just spun the t-belt and sheared that gear right off, but I would think the T-Belt would snap before the metal cam gear broke. Either way thats some nutty sh*t man...lol
