b20 non-vtec build ?s
alrite done with sohc's now and gonna try out b's
so i just picked up a 1994 Cx hatchback and gathering up parts for either a jdm b20b or usdm b20z swap with the higher comp phk pistons.
my goal is not to have a LS1 killer, but to bring out the max potential of a b20 phk stock block non-vtec on the track
for now, i want to see my 1/4 ETs with just i/h/e
rmf replica header
ebay intake w/ blox velocity stack
2.5 exhaust with a dynomax bullet & 06+ si muffler
chip/tuned on crome ecu
eventually later on going with a ported & crower cammed p8r head which will raise my redline.
now b20s are low revving but with the p8r head, its going to rev higher.
what tranny should i choose? b16? gsr? itr? i have the money for either.
i will be using drag radials/ slicks so these trannys are going to get abused.
-b16 trans are a little weaker on the synchros and diff, and so this is a downfall, but could it take on the torque of a non-vtec b20?
-GSR trans seems good but since its a tad longer, im worrying about the ETs at the track. whats your opinion on this?
- ITR... got an lsd and stronger synchros but eh, well theyre hard to come by
cant make up my mind...
intakes... going with a LS for now, then either a skunk2, or edelbrock performer X
which one would be better for the p8r head?
i got more questions but these are the only ones that are at the top of my head.
thanks for your input, greatly appreciated.

Re: b20 non-vtec build ?s
your going to need alot of work AND a snail to compare to an LS1.
The P8R cams are garbage. Use the USDM B20Z cams. The 9.6:1 PHK pistons will need to be replaced.
Theres type R cast pistons by YCP on ebay which with your P8R will raise compression to 10.9 area. So if you replace the pistons, might as well replace the rods or shot peen the OE rods and use ARP rod bolts.
Alot of bowl work will be needed on the head and alot of material removed to make it flow nicely. Check member "frankacura or acura frank" as he has alot of P8R porting info.
^^ even with those mods, youll need some sort of forced induction to compete with a V8

Hmm, some notes on your original post..........
ITR tranny's do NOT have stronger syncro's than any other b series transmissions.
The P8R head is a nice piece, and does have similar air flow to that of the vtec heads, as well as the same size valves 33mm. It's true the stock cams found in it are not that great, the P75 cams found stock in the B20Z head are actually better, as far as stock cams go. Also, regarding the P75 cams found in a stock B20Z, they have no problem at all making power into reline and bounce off the rev limiter..
What is also nice if interested, is that there are still JR superchargers floating around out there from LS applications, that will bolt right up to the non vtec head, making a great combination with the higher flow head.
Adding a quality header and lightweight flywheel also add "huge" to the driving experience with this swap.
I hope this info helps a bit. Here's a couple shots from my last B20Z project

Re: b20 non-vtec build ?s
@ esotericimage: goal is to bring the max potential of a N/A stock bottom end phk piston b20 in the 1/4 mile. im not looking to kill v8s, hard enough to compete with a ls1 camaro in my old foxbody mustang lol
@ deetz: thank you for clearing that up about the itr tranny.
theres a video on youtube of a non-vtec b20 crx doing 13.6, as far as i know, it only had a b16 tranny, slicks and i/h/e but im not sure.
would like to beat those times

Re: b20 non-vtec build ?s
well, my B20B P8R before boost was 149/143tq with tuning.. this was with PHK pistons.
If your trying to beat 13.6 then ur car better go on a diet. shred every ounce of weight and throw in a midget to drive it. or add in some nitrous.
I was thinking of building a B20 on the side. Going with those TR pistons, and bumping up compression.. but after adding it up, it wasnt worth the trouble.

Re: b20 non-vtec build ?s
Crower 403's wake these engines up nicely. Without any headwork (stock b20z head) and an LS intake manifold I am at 178hp/150tq. B16 tranny, light flywheel and LSD pretty much a must.
