Default Another B20 question...How reliable?

I searched for a while and found some pretty good info but nothing I was really looking for.. So, Im looking into doing a B20/Vtec swap into my 1992 Si...

How reliable will it be if I just bought the B20 Long block, B16 Head, and a Gsr or ITR Tranny? With basic bolt ons, will it get me to work everyday ?

Later on down the road I hope to boost this motor and since there is an issue with the sleeves on the B20, will Godzilla sleeves from golden eagle along with JE or Wiseco pistons make it any stronger?

Thanks a lot in advance and I will continue to search while I wait for anyone to help...

the b20vtec has never left me stranded..... the b16 that i had was more problems than this engine.... you just have to make sure it is done right..... and that usually cost a pretty penny........ (i heard..... i only spent 3,000)

Yea I plan on sending it to a professional to do the sleeves and stuff like that...IM going to get only the best parts but how well will a stock B20 block with a stock B16 head hold up for me? Im basically looking to use this set up for a few months while I save up enough money to purchase the sleeves and pistons and all the good stuff lol....

thanks

well the things with frankensteins are the different amounts of oil that flows around in a factory VTEC block and an non-VTEC block the oil squirters squirt different amounts of oil and the frankensteins dont have the oil squirters that a VTEC block comes with that why u gotta run the oil line and do all that lil bullshit dont get me wrong there great power output motors but they wont live as long as a factory VTEC motor

Well, this is a hard one for me to answer 'cause I love Frankenstein motors. Why? Because of a video I saw called "CiViC vs. Ferrari". Don't know if you have seen it, but it shows a LS/VTEC CiViC kicking a Ferrari F355's *** in a street race, blah, blah, blah...

Anyway, what you have to remember is - (horse)power is nothing more than the product of torque and RPM. Hondas make power through high-RPM's, not torque. It's the ol' joke, you know? H-o-n-d-a = Hold-On-Not-Done-Accelerating

The problem with tuning ANY B20 is:

1) They have a sh!tty rod angle, and...
2) ...it limits their redline.

I can hear it now - "WTF are you talking about BDC? I got a dyno chart showing a LS/VTEC doing 9500-RPM on rollers!"

Yes, I've seen those too, but here's the deal - A LS/VTEC will screech like a banshee, but they don't have the correct rod angle to do this for very long. So, I think that negates consideration by you because of your need for reliability.

Thinking this through... with a B20-whatever, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. The reason to go with a B20 is because it has more torque, but it won't rev. Fine! You stick a f*cking VTEC head on it, and it'll rev, but the sh!tty rod angle won't support high-revs for very long. It's like a time bomb - I revved it this time - hee, hee, got away with it again - one more time, YES - whoops!

See where I'm going with this???

Look, if you want to build a B-series monster motor - and you don't give a **** if it grenades or not while you're kicking Ferrari bootie - then go LS/VTEC. However, if all you want to do is go I/H/E on an otherwise stock motor, then a B20 is going to be a BIG disappointment for you. After all, it's a damn CR-V motor, you know?

Personally, I think you should go with a GSR motor, for resale value if nothing else. B20 swaps aren't worth a damn unless you feel like going the Frankenstein route, and all that's going to do is prove you're crazy in most ppl's minds.

There's no bragging rights driving a CiViC with a underpowered SUV motor, bro. The B20 has the potential of being the baddest B-series motor of them all, but unless you're willing to do it right, I'd forget the idea...
quote was from from BlackDeuceCoupe in my recent topic i posted

and this is from my IM chat with HT member Pest:

(12:27 AM 2/18/2003) Cuong-nutz: i've heard you have a great crvtec....
ive was planning on saving up for a gsr swap but after much reading about the b20, it's gained my love
i was wondering if you built the b20 vtec yourself?

(3:50 AM 2/19/2003) pest: Build it myself?? Not all of it. It was mainly put together by Raver Motorsports in CA.
I have a stock JDM B20b bottomend & stock b16a head w/ cam gears.

Where do you live @ & have you ever rode in a car w/ a B20/Vtec??

I have had a GSR swap before & this B20/Vtec beats it hands down!!

Have any questions?? I be glad to try & answer them

Pete

(7:33 AM 2/19/2003) Cuong-nutz: How is the b20 without the vtec vs the gsr?

(11:30 PM 2/19/2003) pest: I never had just a plain B20, nor have I ever drove one.
Pete

(11:33 PM 2/19/2003) Cuong-nutz: i posted up a topic in the eg civic+ forum to figure out what engine to get and narrowed it down to the b20 and gsr-- reason i'm asking you...

(11:34 PM 2/19/2003) pest: B20 w/ the later possibility of VTEC!! That would be my decision

(11:37 PM 2/19/2003) Cuong-nutz: so tell me.. how much have you spent on your engine/car?

(11:47 PM 2/19/2003) pest: Car was free 90 CRX SI ... was wrecked & I pulled it out of weeds. That car is stripped now getting painted & waiting on my new B20/vtec.
My other car is a 97 Civic Coupe w/ the b20/vtec I have had for a while now that I took out of the CRX. That car cost 10k in 99, but I bought it turbo'd & w/ some other mods. The B20/vtec entire swap cost me 3900, but it was worth it.

(11:53 PM 2/19/2003) Cuong-nutz: axles and everything for 3900?

(11:55 PM 2/19/2003) pest: Minus tranny (I had one) & shift linkages & lil parts.

(12:02 AM 2/20/2003) Cuong-nutz: sounds like a great deal! how long have you have your setup?

(5:10 PM 2/20/2003) pest: I have had this set up for about 1 1/2 years & I have about 30k miles on the engine. About 700 miles of those are REAL RACE miles. Think how many 1/8 & 1/4 mile runs that is... plus the numerous tracks I have had this engine @.
hope it gives you an idea and some more info
