HELP! code p0336
Hey guys, I'll start with some background info. Had my 99 itr motor rebuilt fall of 2013, sat until last spring. Ever since the rebuild its been throwing code p0336 for the crank position sensor in the distributor.
I had a tough time getting it started in the spring but after getting it running 100 kms in the head gasket blew. Got it replaced last summer and had an ac system put back in as it was taken out by previous owner. After picking it up from the mechanic it ran great, but was still throwing the code, VTEC engaged and the car ran fine so I just drove like that last summer because I just wanted to drive the car.
I built a new distributor using OEM parts over the winter, the original distributor was filling up with the "red dust of death"and was throwing the code so I thought I could fix my problems with a freshened up distributor. I started the car up today, it took allot of cranks to get it to start and every time since it's been taking a few cranks to start, not the usual kick and start, the motor isnt running perfectly smooth after start up and won't rev past 3500 rpms, and code p0336 still persists, even with a different sensors/distributor.
Lastly the only other code being thrown is the code for the secondary o2 sensor which I'm aware of because the previous owner removed that too for unknown reasons. I have a sensor and bung ready to fix that problem. I just want to tackle this issue first.
I'm lost on what to do next. Should I check for continuity in the ckp wire through the harness to the ecu? Also I'm a total noob with electronic troubleshooting as you can see by my last thread.

Re: HELP! code p0336
Were you talking about the sensor by the oil pump, or in distributor?

Re: HELP! code p0336
How do I "measure resistance" what settings do I need to set the multi meter at and where do I put the ground probe? I pieced together that the red probe will be placed onto the terminals in question but where does the ground probe go?

Re: HELP! code p0336
Tested the distributor sensors and 2 more spare sets of distributor sensors, the 2 spare sets consist of just the wires and sensors still connected, on every sensor I got readings of .38 ohms for all three sensors or .40 on all 3 sensors, since the reasons are all the same I assume the sensors are all functioning even though the manual states 0.5 or 1.0
And for continuity I simply placed both probes on either side of the same terminal and got readings of 0.00 which from what I understand means that there is continuity.
If the way I tested is correct my results indicate that the sensors are functioning and that there is continuity, so my next step is to test the wiring at the ecu terminals, but I can't until tomorrow my car is parked in my parents garage, I removed the distributor and took it hone after work today so I could test it when I had free time.
If the way I tested is wrong can someone please explain how I'm supposed to use the multi meter?
Thanks again guys for all the help, I have already learned some valuable info which I appreciate allot.

Hey guys...
I haven't found the solution to my problem but I did discover something today. I took a look at the timing on my car and it's out, it's out by half a tooth, so it's impossible to get to tdc.
Could this be why I'm throwing this code? Because the timing is off? Would setting the ignition timing fix the issue of it being off?

Re: HELP! code p0336
Well after weeks of frustration and wondering and tearing down distributors and rebuilding them, I got in touch with an old buddy that still has his 99 civic sir and I borrowed his distributor today, my car roared to life no problem after installing it, code 0336 gone.
After letting my car run for 20-30 mins I tried my distributor that wouldn't start the car yesterday, and the car started up just fine, no more code 0336, and was revving normally and past 3500 rpms.
I'm super stoked that my car is running but I'm totally stumped as to why the same distributor that wouldn't start my car yesterday started it today, after running for 30 mins with a different distributor first... Perhaps I flooded the car when trying to start it yesterday?
The car has been sitting since last October, i also remember last year in the spring the car also had a hard time starting much like this year, and I had to pull the plugs and let the car sit for a day to dry up before it finally started.
Every other Honda I have ever owned usually starts right up in the spring after sitting for the winter, I can't seem to figure out why my itr has a hard time starting up in the spring.
Regardless I'm just happy that it's running and the code is gone, thank u very much Veks for all your help, I learned allot about multi meters and how to use one, plus the helms pages you gave me was a life saver, I wouldn't know where to begin if you didn't help out, and thanks also to Chase for the input, much appreciated.
It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders, the car has been constantly bothering me the last few weeks and it's finally over, time to drive that spoiled car of mine!
