Default how much oil loss is considered normal?

Ok guys, I have a 94 teg RS. It has ~106k miles on it, and I'm second owner. I changed the oil about 1k miles ago to valvoline maxlife 10w30.

Well, checked dipstick today, and its down almost halfway inbetween the dots on the dipstick. Should I be worried about this??? There are no oil puddles under the car after sitting overnight, however, there is a moist area on the block near the distributor.....

I guess my question is....is it ok to burn a little bit of oil? I don't drive the car TOO hard, but do take it to redline occasionally.....could this be causing it to burn?

I know you guys have seen a ton of oil threads, but it would really help ease my mind if I got some answers...thx!

I"m wondering this too... I put in 1 quart every 1k miles or so. This was with Mobil 1 10w30 (TriSyn). I just tried some Valvoline 10w30 synthetic oil during my last oilchange at 95k miles to see if anything would change, but it's still drinking oil every 1k miles. Actually, now that I think about it, it was more like 800 miles the last time I checked and filled up a quart. Checked my dipstick 3-4 times (at every gas fillup) and the last time I did, it was dry =\ How's everybody else's?

My 98 GSR uses about half a quart every 3,000 miles.

If you are burning oil, before you start freaking out about rings, or valve seats I'd replace the PCV valve.

Depends on how hard I drive. The more I push it, the more I burn. About 1 to 1 &1/2 quarts in between 3000 miles on average. That's on Mobil sysn.

halfway between the 2 dots is probably about 1/4 qt to 1/2 qt of oil. the oil around the distributor is the exhaust cam seal in case you didn't know yet. you should be fine

All depends on how hard you drive it. But if your worried its leaking through the rings just do a compression test. But sounds fine to me.

Pull out one of your spark plugs and see if any oil is leaking into the shaft where they go. My car is losing oil right now because of that. If so, you'll need to replace the spark plug o-ring gaskets & the valve cover gasket.

Even when I was LEAKING oil from my oil return line from turbo to oil pan, I never lost anything between oil changes that would show a big difference on my dipstick at all, honestly.

Mabye its you guys using synth that get your oil eatin quicker... I have 0 problems and oil consumption with regular 10w30 oil. I've used quaker state, penzoile, and now castrol gtx.....

Alright, I'll be serious now.

You must 100% eliminate the fact that you are leaking. For the *MOST* part, once you leak, no oil will save you (again *MOST* of the time).

You're saying you see moisture around the distributor area? Possible culprits would be Valve cover gasket, Distributor O-Ring, and Cam Seal.

Clean any oily areas, drive for roughly 30 minutes and check the area again if oil has repopulated it.

HTH,

Oz
