Sorry guys, another oil change question
Ok, I was told that if i switched to Mobil1 that i could go longer before changing oil. i know people usually change their oil every 3,000 or less miles, even with synthetic. But i was wondering why Porsche and Mercedes (using Mobil1) schedules their oil changes every 10,000 miles or even once a year. Also my brothers 1.8T jetta goes in for service every 5,000 miles using non-synthetic.

Here is what I do. I run synthetic oil and at 3000 miles I change just the filter. Then I add one quart (top it off). So I get 7,000 miles out of my oil.

I would still continue to change oil every 3000 miles. It's a good practice to get into. Preventive maintenance.

i've always been 3000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. however, i've always done every 3000 miles no matter how long/short its been.
can someone please tell me why time affects it? does oil degrade over time? as far as i know it doesnt have a "shelf life" so whats the point in stating time?
thankyou and i hope i didnt hi-jack this post

I just generaly reset my trip odometer every time, and change it every 2500 miles. I use non synthetic castrol oil or valvoline.

change filter every 10k miles, use an oil analysis kit to determine when you need to change your oil.

Honda recomends every 7,500 miles. Even on the older Honda's 84 ect. if you use a better oil then you shouldnt have to chang it as often, just depends really on where you drive ect. I think a oil change every 5k w/ a turbo and a good filter is perfectly ok.

maybe this sounds dumb....but can i verify its ok to change it too often? i think i've read somewhere not to change the oil in a brand new car too soon...but if the motor is way past new, its ok to do it as soon as you want, right? i hope i dont loose a % point for this one...

I use Mobil 1 synthetic and change it every 2000 miles.
Same here...but there are times when I let it go to 2500 miles.

Yeah my honda manual says every 7500. Changing your oil more frequently won't hurt you, but its all kind of hyped up. I change mine around every 5000 miles on my non boosted b16, and on the turbo one around every 2500..

I didn't boost but drive 100 miles a day, change oil every 8k to 10k and use oil analysis to see if it is ok. The analysis says that it would run that long without breaking the oil down.
If you drive city then your oil is not warmed up enough and fuel/water gets into oil and degrade it, so you have to change it more frequently.
But with M1 even city driving you can do 5k and probably 10k with freeway
