Installing Piston Rings question... HELP
Hey guys I just finished putting together my short block (B18B1 with P30 pistons) and I was thinking about how I installing my rings - I put the top ring pointing foward to 1 and the second ring pointing to 4 and the oil rings just kind of together. Will this effect anything? if so how? is it bad to have the rings the way I do, being 180º different
Thanks
Kyle

the oil rings just kindof together? hope you dont mean the gaps all in the same place. thats bad news. the first compression rings should be at like 2 or 3 o clock, the second at like 9 or 10 o clock, the main oil ring at like 5 or 6, the upper oil ring a little to the right of that gap, and the lower ring to the left of the main oil ring gap.
the oil rings should be on either side. hope this helps

All rings need to be staggered so that compression will stay inside the cylinder and not leak during the power stroke. I would highly suggest reringing the motor so that the rigs are staggered correctly.
Okay I will do, but having the rings facing 180º from each other, wouldnt that be staggered enough to not have leak?
or why would this be bad?

you cant have all the rings at 180, because there are 5 rings that need to be staggered. you should have them all equally apart from eachother, thats why.

Okay i understand that that is what needs to be done, but does anyone know why they cannot be facing the opposites of each other because technically they are staggered
i believe it was just explained why. unfortunately, you're gonna have to redo the rings. so, tear it down and do it correctly. trust me, you don't want to be stuck with a motor that's burning oil from hell because you didn't do it correctly.

as long as the gaps are staggered like that diagram you're okay
