I am not a car guru, nor have the space to repair my car, though my dad is a snap-on tool dealer... Anyway to the point.. Does anyone have clue how much it is to replace the syncros ? I believe my 2nd and 3rd are gone even though the car only has 68k miles on it. Want to get a rough estiment before I call around.

 

What type of transmission? My hydro tranny was grinding it's third gear and it even went to second a little and all I did was bleed the tranny a bit and it was good to go.

 

i have not replaced mine, but my brother (mechanic at honda) said they are expensive. probably 200-300 each syncro set.

wut do you mean you bleed the tranny a little? wut did you do exactly?

dang, If you have a D-series motor you could get a new tranny for that, Make sure you need the syncro's for sure before you spend all that money

Its the stock one on a 00 civic EX coupe

 

Ok folks after calling around here locally -- Knox, TN I have found out that it would be cheaper to get a new transmission.. Great.. Hrm wonder if this is under my 100k powertrain warrenty from honda. Syncros shouldnt have went out at 68k.

How hard would it be to replace the syncros myself? Or should I just go for a new transmission

 

from what i understand of replacing syncros which isnt much if you dont know how hard its gonna be dont even bother tryin. not sayin you cant do it but ive heard its a bitch id go with just gettin a new tranny.

 

From what i have gathered here and else were you are correct... Guess i will save.. Might as well go with 00 si engine and tranny all at one time. Junk yard here i come..

Though a thought came to mind, could a slipping clutch cause the problem with the syncros ?

 

if it grinds then its the synchros. is this only high rpm grinding? is it slight or super rough? if its only slight Id try replacing your tranny fluid with synchromesh. it works wonders for lots of members on HT with slightly grinding trannies

Commen problem i find with people saying that, first off all the things that happen with a bad tranny syptom wise can be caused by a clutch also, first off change the fluid in the tranny should be done every 25-30k, check to make sure your clutch is ok after those steps if everything checks out then dif deaper into teh tranny.

As for replacing sycros it isn't that hard you just have to know what your doing if you havn't done one before dno't attepmt it, also if you want to try to do it yourself when you split the case make sure all the bolts are out and watch out for flying detent *****

 

Another prob is on the main shafts the out board bearing get a bit of play in them and ur tranny starts to miss align the counter shafts and it gets harder to shift if u pull ur tranny out grab the main shaft spin it listen for dry bearing noises and also exsesive shaft play.

Yeah 1-2 syncro is a full set $366cdn lol **** that

 

Thanks guys, first step will be to replace the transmission fluid to see if that helps,. Though I guess need to get info on how to do that.. Asked the dealer to do it when I take the car but they never do. Having a local friend that is a honda mechanic check the transmission over when he does my brakes, but that one be for a while.

 

Just get another trans...from a reputable source or a respected honda-tech or d-series.org member...
