Default s40 y8 tranny question

is the tranny from a EX 5spd called a s40 or a s40 k4f,

what does a automatic one say

The little sticker tells you NOTHING about the tranny gearing, only what generation it is.

L3 = 88-91
S20 = 92-95
S40 = 96-00

To TRUELY know if you have a small bearing case or a large bearing case, you must find the casting numbers near the oil fill plug.

96-00
P4A-A000 = small bearing case = DX/HX/LX etc.
P4A-B000 = large bearing case = EX
