Default Broke a exhaust manifold stud deep within the head

I broke a exhaust manifold stud deep within the head.

What do I need to do to remove it? Drill it out and retap it? I've heard you can slit a line in the middle of the stud and attempt to use a flat head to twist it out, but it's pretty deep in there.

What should I do?

Try one of the two things you mentioned...

Also, there is a tool you can buy for doing exactly that. I forget what it is called. Perhaps someone can help me out... Just go to sears, and tell them what is going on, and they will hook it up.

An 'extractor' I believe.

drill out and retap , your going to have to use a helicoil if you wish to retain the same size bolts/stud.

I think that's my only option.

I'm gonna get a friends dad to do it for me, I guess. Frankly I have no money to spend on an extractor of any kind.

you can do it yourself. It's pretty easy. The screw extractor only cost $1-$2. You drill a hole in the the broken stud with the correct drill bit size and use the extractor and screw backwards. the extractor is threaded backwards. But be carefull not to break the extractor because it's hard to drill it out.

A screw extractor wont cut it. Just asked a few guys it's too deep within the head.

I have to drill it out.

Does anyone know what EXACT drill bit I should use to drill it out?

two sizes less than the diameter of the bolt
measure how deep the bolt goes into the head
then place a hose over the bit making sure that
is not going to go deeper into the head

ok bro, i just did this like 2 months ago, i got colbalt bits from sears. i broke 3 of them drilling a hole in the bolt, i keept drilling untill the bit wint threw the end of the stud. then i hammerd a screw extractor in and it came right out.

total cost was like 10$

just make sure u get COLBALT bits (they are strongest i hear) and also make sure they dont give you a wood screw extractor.

2 secs ill post a pic of the 1 u need

you can always take it to the machine shop.
you are going to get the head re-surfaced right?

well I have the head off the block... so it'll be easier. I'm going to try that method first. Resort to a tap and die last.

Since broken studs is the topic maybe you guys can give me a hand too. A while back I broke a stud holding my valve cover on. It was just the tip that went into the nut though, so a good portion of it is exposed. Is it possible to just unscrew the old stud and screw in a new one?

If so what type of studs do you all recommend? I've seen several "performance" studs but OEM might be the way to go. I dunno...

I'd opt for the heliacoil if I was you. Go to your local auto parts store and purchase the proper helia coil kit. It will tell you what size drill bit and what tap to use. Then just follow the instructions to install the helia coil and away you go!
