brake horsepower

An engine dyno is also known as a "Prony" or engine brake.

bhp CAN stand for brake horsepower, but the original post is pertaining to what factories claim with "bhp"....

Brake horsepower (BHP)-The power produced by an engine, measured at the output end of its crankshaft, that is available for driving a car. Shaft power is usually measured by a brake dynamometer, hence the term.

Brake Dynamometer- A machine for measuring the torque and power produced by an engine; so called because it loads the engine by "braking" (restricting it's speed) in order to measure it's output.

One thing that i've always thought was funny on boards, is how people will pose a quesiton..."what does bhp mean" and instead of just one person answering the question. and end of post (especially for something as uncomplicated as this) you have people answering again, n' again, n' again.
"brake horsepower"
"brake hp"
"thats correct...b is for brake"
"it stands for bfrank hp power"

anyways, i think we get the picture

Funny you bring this up. I've had a poster of a Saleen S7 on my wall (yeah a 25 year old with car posters on the wall!) for a year or so and it specs it a "Bhp/Hk; 550". I always figured base. Anyway, what's Hk than?
