what performance gains will i see from polishing the crankshaft and balancing. is knife edging realy necessary. thanks H-T all motor gurus.

polishing and balancing should always be considered for anytype of performance buildup...its not really too expensive either. also be sure you balance the entire rotating assembly.

knife edge is really not recommended as it can reduce the strength of the crank. and the gains are relatively minimal.

people try to argue that the crank is slowed down by the oil it dips into... when in fact, it never dips into the oil pan

ya, knife edging is a american car thing, cause they're crank dips into the actuall oil right? i got a balanced and mirco polished crank...its weird because it dosent even feel to smooth...i thought it was supposed to be...

it's actually more of an aerodynamic thing than an attempt to reduce parasitic loss

sure...but losing the reliability and strength of the stock crank to gain some aero dynamics is high cost.

I agree... which is why I haven't/wouldn't do it in a street car. In a dedicated race engine that get rebuilt every season yeah, but not in a street car.

Domestic cranks don't dip into oil any more than Honda cranks do.

so where did this myth come from that everyone talks about, how the oil slows down the crank as it cuts through it?

If the crank actually was running through the oil it would foam up pretty bad I'd imagine.

What do you guys think of Eagle cranks? I am especially interested in comments on the Knife-Edged Eagle.

there is a "fog" of oil in your bottom end, the crank must cut through the "fog" which can actually be quite thick.

Knife egding a crank does not make the crank any weaker b/c it is taken off the counter weights.
